Historic Walking Tour: Main Street & Garrison School
Prior to 1865, it was against the law to teach a slave to read or write, and for more than a century Liberty African Americans lived, as other blacks in America, under the law of “separate but equal education.” This tour will take you into the neighborhood and school of the first African American residents in Liberty.
These history tours are led by a variety of volunteers and local experts, and feature a different topic each month. The tours are a favorite among history and architecture buffs across the metropolitan area. All tours will begin at 10 a.m. and generally last an hour.
All tours are free (with the exception of the Foodie Tour in July) and open to the public. Tours are on foot; so, participants are reminded to wear comfortable walking shoes. For more information about the tours, call the City’s Community Development Office at 816.439.4537.
