This January we're offering something new...
Week-long classes with a focus on fun and lasting memories!
Start 2021 with a creative spark! These virtual workshops will provide students the opportunity to explore new avenues of their individual artistry. Students will create together and share what they've accomplished at the end of the week. Each workshop's sharing will look different depending on the discipline and teaching artist. See specific workshop descriptions for more information!

January 4 - 8
PERSONAL PORTRAITS
TIME: 5:15-6:05pm
AGES: 8 - 14
TEACHING ARTIST: Paige Ahlenius
FEE: $75
By creating their very own portraits, students will learn how to reflect personal characteristics in their art. Students will use subjects like Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Thurgood Marshall, Cesar Chavez, Malala Yousufzai, or Barack Obama as an example of personality traits to reflect on similar traits they recognize in themselves. Mediums of paint, collage and illustration along with their own unique creativity will be used to make an impactful portrait.
JUST DANCE: WINTER WARM-UP
TIME: 4:30-5:20pm
AGES: 11 - 18
TEACHING ARTIST: Kim Shope

In this 5-day ballet workshop for advanced dancers, students will focus on technique, strength, flexibility, musicality, grace, and artistry. A short warm-up will be followed by improvisational activities designed to teach the elements of dance and how they relate to the choreographic process. Each dancer will have the opportunity to choreograph and teach their own portion of a collaborative dance that will be recorded on the final day to share with family and friends via video.

January 11 - 15
WIZARDING WORLD OF KCYA
TIME: 5:30-6:20pm
AGES: 7 - 13
TEACHING ARTIST: Emma Carter
FEE: $70
Do you love the adventures and characters of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series? In this 5-day workshop session, students will transport themselves to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and create their own version of the famous story. Students will work with a professional teaching artist to learn about plot, characterization, and the tools of an actor. An assortment of games and exercises will help students gain skills and confidence to use on stage and in day-to-day interactions. On the final day, students will record their favorite activities to be shared with family and friends via video.
THE GREATEST SHOW
TIME: 5:15-6:05pm
AGES: 5 - 12
TEACHING ARTIST: Franci Witte

Dancers will be saying it's "never enough" at the end of this dance for musical theatre workshop. After a brief warm-up, dancers will incorporate Broadway jazz, light ballet, and basic musical theatre movement to the music of The Greatest Showman. Dancers will collaborate throughout the week, allowing each dancer to add their favorite steps to the choreography incorporating rhythm, coordination, and lots of energy. On the final day, students will record their creation to be shared with family and friends via video.

A FROZEN FANTASY
TIME: 5:15-6:05pm
AGES: 5 - 12
TEACHING ARTIST: Kim Shope
FEE: $70
Beginning ballet dancers will "Let it Go" and dream what it will be like "In Summer" with a short ballet warm-up, followed by improvisational activities to explore the elements of dance, inspiring creativity and imagination. The class will collaborate on a group dance allowing each dancer to add their favorite ballet-inspired steps to the choreography. On the final day, students will record their creation to be shared with family and friends via video.
ONCE IN A LIFETIME: Glam Rock to Proto-Punk
TIME: 6:00-6:50pm
AGES: 8 - 18
TEACHING ARTIST: Chris Hudson
FEE: $70
Play, collaborate, and create with others in a 'garage' rock band format. In this 5-day workshop session, students will learn to play songs from the 1970's Glam Rock and Proto-Punk movements. Discover who influenced artists like David Bowie, The Talking Heads, The Kinks, and what marks they left on music today. Through call and response, experimentation, and practice the group will create its own version of songs from this moment in rock history. Students will record their work on the final day to be shared with family and friends. STUDENTS MUST ALREADY HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE WITH THE GUITAR, BASS, KEYBOARD or DRUMS.

BLOW US ALL AWAY: SONGS FROM HAMILTON
TIME: 5:15-6:05pm
AGES: 5 - 12
TEACHING ARTIST: Franci Witte
FEE: $70
Dancers won't "throw away their shot" as they dance "non-stop" in this hip hop Hamilton workshop. After a brief warm-up, dancers will explore the fundamentals of hip hop alongside the Tony and Grammy-winning music of Hamilton. Dancers will collaborate throughout the week, allowing each dancer to add their favorite steps to the choreography incorporating rhythm and coordination with no suggestive music/movements. On the final day, students will record their creation to be shared with family and friends via video.
IMPROV-A-PALOOZA
TIME: 5:30-6:20pm
AGES: 8 - 14
TEACHING ARTIST: John Mulvey
FEE: $70
In this 5-day workshop session, students will use improvisational techniques, performance skills, and imagination to create their own long-form improv story. No scripts or props needed! Students will work with a professional teaching artist to learn about this genre of improvisational theatre from Charna Halpern and iO Theater to The Harold. An assortment of games and exercises will help students hone skills and gain confidence both on stage and in day-to-day interactions. On the final day, students will record their creation to be shared with family and friends via video.
