SUMMARY:Ripples: Water\, Community\, and You
DESCRIPTION:Open Feb. 8\, 2025 – Jan. 10\, 2026\nWater is the lifeblood of human civilization\, shaping our history\, economy\, and environment. “Ripples” explores how water has connected us all—past\, present\, and future. From ancient inland seas to today’s interconnected watersheds\, humans have always relied on water for survival\, trade\, agriculture\, recreation\, and more. But as we face increasing challenges like historic droughts\, floods\, and pollution\, our relationship with water has never been more complex. \nVisitors to “Ripples” will dive into Johnson County’s award-winning modern water management\, the ways humans have both controlled and been shaped by water\, and the evolving mindset that views water and humans as interdependent. The exhibit showcases the region’s history through interactive displays\, artifacts\, and stories that illustrate the ripples left by past decisions and the ones we continue to create today. \nNow available as a book! Stop by the Museum Store to pick up a copy of “Ripples: Water\, Community\, and You.” Open Monday – Saturday\, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.

SUMMARY:JACQUELINE BISHOP “Above the Fruited Plain” Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Recognized as one of the Visionary Imagists of the contemporary American South\, Jacqueline Bishop is known for paintings\, drawings and installations exploring the psychological connections between humans and non-humans. Informed by the history of landscape painting and her travels in South America\, Central America\, and Southeast Asia\, Bishop’s work addresses the politics of landscape and the realities of migration and extinction\, imbuing the genre with a keen sense of intimacy\, agency\, and metaphor. \n\nAbove the Fruited Plain \n\n“Above the Fruited Plain” refers to the poem written by Professor Katharine Lee Bates in 1893 after traveling through the Midwest from Massachusetts to teach in Colorado. Her metaphorical words ended up as a national song that celebrates the beauty of landscape titled America the Beautiful. This exhibition presents the psychological connection we have to a threatened natural world. Scientists did not record climate change until the late 19th century which could mean that the act of landscape destruction might only be recorded in Art History. I explore the long tradition of landscape painting and the social/political issues behind nature itself. My work omits the human figure but explores animal knowledge. These “world landscapes” are metaphors for the link between human and nonhumans. Included in this exhibition are numerous prints on paper published by Zanatta Editions\, Kansas City\, KS. The vintage cotton dress series symbolizes the years of forced labor of cotton from the land. The large-scale paintings have a dominant palette of alizarin crimson\, a pigment that was used by the Egyptians for textiles and murals dating back to 3000 BC. Alizarin crimson symbolizes the methane in our environment resulting in chemical-filled sunsets\, the color of roses\, blood\, and algae in the Gulf of Mexico. \n\n-Jacqueline Bishop

SUMMARY:Bring Out The Books
DESCRIPTION:Bring Out the Books is the best double play—baseball and books. \nRoyals baseball is for everyone. So\, we’re going to make it even more accessible while boosting children’s literacy here in Kansas City! Beginning on July 25\, each home game\, up to 100 fans can exchange a new or gently used children’s book for a View Reserved ticket to a game on that same date. \nHere’s how it works: one (1) book donation per fan in exchange for one (1) ticket redemption per fan. Before the game\, bring your books to Gate E at Kauffman Stadium. The ticket window will open 30 minutes before stadium gates and will remain open until first pitch or until all vouchers have been handed out. Just hand in your book and receive your ticket voucher! \nLearn more about our other literacy-focused initiatives at royals.com/literacyleague.
