SUMMARY:FREE Day at Lanesfield Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:Lanesfield Historic Site is open to the public from 10:00am to 4:00pm on the second Saturday of each month. Admission is free! \nAbout the Site\nThe limestone schoolhouse\, the last remaining structure in the former town of Lanesfield\, is the oldest operating schoolhouse in Johnson County. Students attended from 1869 – 1963 when the school closed. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The site today includes the original schoolhouse\, four outbuildings\, and a modern visitors center that houses the exhibit One-Room Schools in Kansas\, a museum store\, and restrooms. \nThe site features seven interpretive panels on the grounds that tell the story of the schoolhouse\, the town of Lanesfield and its connection with General and U.S. Senator James H. Lane\, the reasons for the town’s eventual decline\, Santa Fe Trail history\, stories of the local Border War\, and the agricultural experience in Johnson County. An accompanying audio tour is also available.

Bring them out to the parking lot of the Theatre in the Park\, located in beautiful Shawnee Mission Park\, to explore trucks\, tractors\, construction\, and city vehicles up close. \nCrawl\, climb\, and sit in the driver’s seat and talk with the real life operators of these vehicles. Check out the featured character tow truck\, as well as many other kids favorites.  The first hour of the event will be sensory-friendly with no horns or sirens for those who prefer this event a bit quieter. \nINCLEMENT WEATHER: In the event there is inclement weather on Saturday morning\, our event will be canceled.  Johnson County Park and Recreation District will post this event status on our Facebook page at 9:30 am on Friday\, April 10 and will also post an update on this page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBenefiting Special Olympics & Adaptive Recreation programs\nAdmission to this three-hour event is free\, but a donation of $10 per family is suggested at the gate.
