MAYA: The Great Jaguar Rises
Union Station 30 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64108
Deep in the tropical rainforests, the epic Maya civilization reached improbable heights then mysteriously collapsed. The bustling cities in the lowlands of Guatemala, Mexico, Belize and Honduras were abandoned and eventually reclaimed by nature . . . taking unsolved mysteries with them. Yet, Maya culture never disappeared. Their descendants still live across Central America and Maya communities have succeeded in preserving their identity, languages and traditions.
Taking a cultural-ecological approach, MAYA gives a holistic image of Maya culture and shows how it has developed over time in relation to its environment – from its classical peak to the present.
Utilizing the latest archaeological technology to unravel the mysteries, the MAYA exhibition presents 300 priceless, original artifacts. Their detailed images and inscriptions tell the stories of kinglike rulers and everyday life.
Exhibition visitors will journey through the awe-inspiring Maya architecture and astonishing cultural accomplishments in an immersive exhibition space, decipher hieroglyphs, learn about the intricate Maya calendar and unearth the ancient burial site of Uxual. And by the end of their exploration, visitors will discover how this remarkable sophisticated civilization built such complex cities in the middle of the jungle, why these cities were eventually abandoned and the sustained and profound impact the Maya culture continues to influence each of us today.
