Join us for a FREE showcase of hands-on, engaging, educational experiences for kids of all ages!
Schedule
10 a.m. Unleash your child’s inner musician and make an instrument out of recycled crafts in the Midwest Trust Center (MTC) lobby, led by the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. If there’s energy left to burn, visit MyGym’s gymnastics arena to work on balancing and tumbling.
11 a.m. Sing along in Spanish and English with 123 Andrés at a MTC Kids Jam Concert in Polsky Theatre.
Noon-3 p.m. Dive into learning with STEAM activities across campus. Choose the ones you wish to attend. Visit each activity at your own pace—there are no scheduled start times. Activity list is below.
3 p.m. Treat the family to a wild musical adventure from the StoneLion Puppets! Karma the elephant and animal photographer Felicia Flash introduce you to the colorful creatures that make our planet magical. Orangutans, Javanese tigers, binturongs, and gibbons swing to the beat of the music while hornbills and dog-faced fruit bats fly into the audience. Intricate marionettes, fun mouth puppets, and even a life-size bear sing about conservation. Join us in GEB 233, Craig Auditorium. “It’s a Jungle Out There” is part of StoneLion’s animal conservation series, which has played since 1986 in zoos across the country.

Solar Observing (Astronomy)
Location: Outdoor Sidewalk from MTC to CLB
Gaze into the Sun safely through an 8-inch telescope. This equipment uses a broadband filter, meaning you can look around for sunspots. Examine even more with a solar telescope—where you can zoom in on the details of the Sun not visible anywhere else.
Constellation Station (Astronomy)
Location: CLB 411
Prepare yourself for night sky exploration at the Constellation Station! Hear the captivating stories behind familiar constellations and learn how ancient astronomers charted the night sky! Through interactive activities, discover how to identify major constellations and connect the dots to trace their shapes. With hands-on guidance, craft your own personalized star wheels, a tool to navigate the night sky with ease. Then, test your constellation creation abilities when you sketch your own on a sky full of stars.
Using Color in Chemistry (Chemistry)
Location: CLB 203
Explore how different atoms make different colors. Use this new understanding to discover how firework colors are made. Try some of the tools scientists use to see those colors, and learn more about what atoms make up a molecule or solution.
Skulls and Flowers and Pelts, Oh My! (Biology)
Location: CLB 409
Become a biology detective as you investigate the stories of skulls, pelts, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. See if you can match skulls to the right animal pelt and test your knowledge of fruits and veggies!
Hands in the Sand: Explore Earth Processes (Geoscience)
Location: CLB 403
Dig into the sand and create landforms like mountains, volcanoes, and valleys. The Augmented Reality Sandbox projects contour lines on the landforms to create topographic maps that we’ll interpret together. The Stream Table generates running water so we can observe how landforms change when shaped by this powerful force of nature.
Playful Puzzles and Patterns for Creative Minds (Math)
Location: MTC 212
Step into a vibrant room and uncover the joy of creating tessellating patterns, a fun mathematical art form. Then, unravel the mysteries of the Tower of Hanoi, a playful and educational adventure game.
Decoding Alien Messages Using Computer Science (Computer Science)
Location: MTC 126A
Hello, astronauts! Your space adventure has taken you to planet Pixel, where alien life is friendly and trying to tell you something. Can you decode their messages using computer science principles? Perhaps uncovering their message will lead you to a sweet discovery!
Computer Gaming: Painting in a Virtual Reality World (Computer Science)
Location: CoLab
Put on a virtual reality headset and be transported to a magical 3D world where your imagination is your only limit! Art and science collide as you paint with virtual brush strokes, creating your own artistic masterpiece. This activity is best suited for ages 5+.

National Academy of Railroad Science: Edible Welding

Learn the process behind how things are made in this tasty activity! With blueprint instructions, use graham crackers and icing to master the concept of welding, including the various techniques and the meaning behind instructional symbols. Apply a weld using cupcake icing and inspect the size of your weld. When finished, snack on your hard work!
