World Vision Global 6K for Water
Shawnee Mission Park 7900 Renner Road, City of Shawnee, Kansas 66219
On Saturday, May 4, 2019, thousands of people will join the world’s largest 6K walk for clean water and walk or run for an extraordinary cause – bringing clean water to children and their families.
In addition to participants from Lenexa, there are dozens of race sites in Kansas City, and around 1,000 race sites throughout the United States and the world.
Six kilometers (or approximately 3.7 miles) is the average distance people – usually women and girls – walk to fetch water for their families and homes in the developing world. Often, the walk is dangerous, children miss school, and the water is dirty. Every $50 registration in the Global 6K for Water provides clean water to one person.
Each day, nearly 1,000 children under age 5 die from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper hygiene– more than AIDS and malaria combined. But thankfully, the number of people without access to clean water is shrinking. Today, nearly ninety percent of the global population has access to clean water, and we believe we can help bring clean water to everyone in part through the Global 6K for Water.
World Vision is the largest non-governmental provider of clean water in the developing world, providing a new person with clean water every 10 seconds. In 2016, World Vision provided access to clean water to 3.2 million people. Learn more about World Vision’s water programs here.
