GloWild: Legends & Lore
This year, I was delighted to experience GloWild at the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium, now in its third year with a brand new theme: Legends & Lore. This year's display features favorite characters and creatures from our favorite stories... mermaids, pirates, wizards, dragons, princesses, and a myriad of animals including exquisite parrots, elephants, dinosaurs, and giraffes bring this year's display to life.

The walk-through nighttime event is truly spectacular. This year, they added many interactive elements including glowing swings, and interactive light up displays. The beautiful silk lanterns celebrating many of our favorite stories are truly a delight for all ages. Visitors will marvel at the craftsmanship in these creative and fantastic displays.

New to GloWild are special fall-themed lanterns that can only be seen from September 6 to October 31. Also new is the fun zone located near Helzberg Penguin Plaza that will include activities this fall like pumpkin decorating, a pint-sized hay maze, pedal tractors, games, and entertainment, all included with admission. Santa will be returning November 1 to December 29 to greet guests in his North Pole Village with new holiday-themed lanterns and holiday activities in the fun zone. Guests will want to visit multiple times to enjoy GloWild in both autumn and winter to experience all it has to offer this year!

Timing:
GloWild opens at 6 pm each evening for entertainment and fun activities prior to the lanterns being lit at 7:30. We spent nearly two hours enjoying the displays and performance, but the amount of time guests spend is up to them. You may walk through the display at your own pace and take it in. Food and drink options will be available at Beastro Café and near Helzberg Penguin Plaza. During this evening event, animals are not available for viewing. Beginning Sept. 18, Sobela Ocean Aquarium will be open for GloWild guests on Wednesday evenings.
Live Performances:
Circus Scorpius will be performing “The Search for Atlantis” in the Beastro Lobby Auditorium at the times below:
- Sunday, Wednesday & Thursday: 6:15 and 8 pm
- Friday & Saturday: 6:15, 6:45, and 8 pm
Fun Facts:
The display was crafted by 151 artisans using over 34 tons of steel and 89,000 feet of fabric.
Free Family Fun:
There will be activities to enjoy before and after seeing the GloWild lanterns.
- 6-8 pm: Enjoy a short tractor-drawn hayride, swings, pedal tractors, a pint-sized hay maze, yard games, and more.
- 6-9 pm: Kids can decorate a mini pumpkin at the gazebo near Polar Bear Passage and ride the Endangered Species Carousel.
- Activities will change in November as they switch from fall fun to Christmas/winter theming!
Tickets:
This event does require a separate ticket from daily Zoo admission. Tickets can be purchased at www.kansascityzoo.org/glowild.
A special discount is available to Friends of the Zoo members on the Tickets page. As a fundraiser for the Zoo, GloWild is a separate ticket from your FOTZ membership.
Accessibility
All of regular Zoo accessibility amenities will be available to rent upon entry. This includes ECV scooters, strollers, wheelchairs, and wagons, as well as our ScooterPal Fur-Wheeler animal-themed electronic scooters. They ask that you reserve your ECV scooters online at least 24 hours in advance.
