Do you enjoy spending time with your dog? And do you want a fun new way to celebrate fall? If you answered “yes” to these questions, visit Jackson County’s annual Dogtoberfest!
Dogtoberfest is a dog-friendly event celebrating autumn. It is located at the Kemper Outdoor Education Center in Fleming Park.
At Dogtoberfest, your dog can compete in agility-courses (or take an agility-course lesson at Dogtoberfest’s workshop), take part in a costume contest, get an AKC Canine Good Citizen Test, and even participate in games.
There’s just as much autumn fun for you, too: you can adopt a pet, see demonstrations of working dogs, enter a Dog/Owner Look-A-Like contest, buy products for your dog, and check out different pet services.
Costume Tips for your Dog
Costumes are optional for Dogtoberfest, but they would love it if you decided to dress up your pup. Here are a couple of costume ideas:
Have fun. And remember, the top priority for your dog’s costume is that she remains comfortable and won’t feel downright miserable when she’s wearing it!
- 2013’s Dogtoberfest takes place Sunday, October 20th, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is FREE with a donation of dog food.

- Dogtoberfest has been very successful, as it is celebrating its 20th anniversary this fall.

Come and visit Dogtoberfest to celebrate fall with your furry friend. You are guaranteed to have a blast!
- You can dress up as your favorite superhero and have your dog be your sidekick. My shih tzu Lizzy dressed up as WordGirl’s sidekick Captain Huggy Face one Halloween.
- Homemade costumes are generally easy to make and inexpensive. Hobby Lobby sells plain dog shirts to decorate for Halloween or any occasion. They also offer a variety of paints, iron-on’s, and decals for the costume.
- If you prefer store-bought getups, consider shopping at PetSmart or Petco. These stores each have a large and clever selection of Halloween costumes for dogs of all sizes. I bought Lizzy a jack-o’-lantern costume to wear on another Halloween.
