The sound of birds cawing, chirping, and squawking filled the air as I climbed aboard the Flying Flamingo, the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium’s brand-new zipline attraction, with my daughter on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Our legs dangled below us as we were securely buckled in. My daughter reached for my hand, and I held hers tightly as the ride began lifting us high into the sky.

We were whisked along at a brisk pace above the Sobela Ocean Aquarium, soaring over the zoo with breathtaking views of the Elephant Expedition, the Flamingo Enclosure, and even Swope Park beyond. Once we reached the top, the ride zoomed backward and brought us smoothly back to the base. My daughter, who had been nervous at the start, beamed with excitement and exclaimed, “I loved it!”

The Flying Flamingo opened on Friday, April 25. It reaches heights of up to 100 feet and speeds of 30 miles per hour. Riders must be at least 42 inches tall and under 300 pounds. Reservations and tickets are required, priced at $8 per person or $15 for two people.
In addition to the new zipline, the zoo is getting ready to launch its next amazing attraction: Dinosaurs Around the World. Thirteen life-size animatronic dinosaurs will be placed throughout the lower section of the zoo. This exciting exhibit runs from May through August and is included with regular admission.
The Flying Flamingo and Dinosaurs Around the World are just two highlights of what makes the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium a favorite family destination. Home to over 1,700 animals across 202 acres, the zoo offers endless adventures. Here are some pro-tips for a successful visit.
KC Parent Pro-Tips for Visiting the Kansas City Zoo:
- Bring a stroller or wagon: The zoo covers a large area, so good walking shoes and a stroller or wagon are must-haves.
- Pack a picnic: There are many picnic areas throughout the zoo. Our favorite spot is in the Africa section, near the playground and lake. Restaurants and snack bars are also available if you prefer to purchase food.
Plan your path: In my opinion, there are two main circuits to explore:
- One route goes from the main entrance through Australia and the Tiger Trail, featuring goat and camel feeding, an open-air kangaroo enclosure, and tiger and chimpanzee exhibits.
- The other route leads toward the Elephant Enclosure, Sobela Ocean Aquarium, and Africa. Here you’ll find zebras, hippos, gorillas, and cheetahs. Note that the pathway between the aviary and the rhino habitat are closed as the zoo makes improvements.
- Don’t miss the Sobela Ocean Aquarium: Opened in 2023, it features 8,000 aquatic animals, including hands-on touch pools with crabs and coral.
- Explore the front plaza: Near the entrance, you’ll find exciting exhibits like Helzberg Penguin Plaza, Stingray Bay, Polar Bear Passage, and Sea Lion Splash.
- Great spots for little ones: The Discovery Barn (which has an indoor slide), Billy Goat Gruff Yard, and several playgrounds are perfect for young kids. My girls especially love visiting the orangutans and climbing on the many animal statues scattered throughout the zoo.
- Attend Animal Chats and Shows: These are fantastic for up-close animal experiences. The sea lion show and polar bear chat are two of my daughters’ favorite memories. Check the zoo’s website for times.
- Ride the transportation options: In addition to the Flying Flamingo, the zoo offers a train, tram, boat ride, Endangered Species Carousel, and the African Sky Safari.
