A sense of calm washed over me as our family entered the newest Inspired Play Cafe location in Merriam Town Center on Wednesday, January 1. In contrast to the electrifying and overstimulating children’s play places we are accustomed to, Inspired Play Cafe’s beautifully decorated and educationally based play center was a welcome change.
My two- and five-year-old daughters eagerly approached the snack bar as we checked in, asking if they could pick something to eat. With a snack area stocked with organic, nutritious options, it was an easy “yes” from me. I ordered an espresso from their full-service cafe, and we enjoyed our treats at one of their many tables. At the tables and cozy couches around us, I could see parents working on laptops or reading while their children explored the enclosed play space, which remained visible to them at all times. Other parents joined their children in the play area and were actively engaged with their kids.
We made our way inside the enclosed play area, and my girls were immediately drawn to the climbing structures. Attached vertically to the wall were a climbing ladder, rope structure, and rock wall. My five-year-old climbed to the top, delighted by the challenge and height of the task. On the opposite structure, my two-year-old was captivated by the tiny swing, perfectly sized for her. This smaller activity structure also featured a version of the ladder, ropes, and rock wall, in addition to the swing and slide.
We spent the next two hours engaged in child-led play with open-ended, Montessori-based toys such as wooden blocks, a low-to-the-ground balance beam and stepping stones, a play kitchen, and an art center. While my daughters played, we struck up conversations with other families, fostering a positive sense of community within the cafe.
Inspired Play Cafe is open seven days a week and accessible through a day pass, punch card, or monthly membership options. Reservations in advance are encouraged, but walk-ins are also welcome. The cafe offers a wide range of classes and events throughout the year and can host private celebrations for birthday parties, baby showers, or moms' groups. Be sure to check their website for hours, rates, and events.
As we gathered our belongings and prepared to head home, I felt refreshed and grateful for the meaningful time spent with my children in such a positive and educational environment.
