As a local mom, I am always looking for simple, meaningful ways to help my kids fall in love with reading, especially in a world where screens are constantly competing for their attention. With so much conversation around the literacy crisis, summer reading programs feel more important than ever. They are free, accessible and a great way to remind kids that books are not homework but rather adventures, comfort, imagination and discovery.
I also love seeing the return of the “90s summer” trend: more time outside, more boredom, more creativity and hopefully a little less screen time. As a 90s baby myself, I can confirm that a lot of my childhood summers were spent at the library browsing the shelves, filling my arms with books and arguing with my siblings over which VHS tapes were making it home with us. Sorry about those late fees, Mom!

Make This a Library Summer
Whether your child is an eager reader, a reluctant reader or somewhere in between, Kansas City summer reading programs are one of the easiest ways to build literacy into your family’s summer without making it feel like school. A weekly library trip, a fresh stack of books, an audiobook in the car or a reading log on the fridge can go a long way in helping kids stay engaged, curious and confident.
And maybe the best part is that summer reading gives families a chance to slow down. In a season that can quickly fill up with camps, travel and screen time, the library offers something refreshingly simple: free books, shared stories, community events and the chance for kids to discover what they love. Here’s to a summer of reading, exploring and bringing back a little bit of that library-filled 90s summer magic.
