Kansas City families have a new reason to visit the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium. The zoo officially opened Giraffe Crossing, a new giraffe habitat designed to give guests a closer, more comfortable way to see the tallest land animals in the world while also creating a better space for the giraffes who call the zoo home.
At the ribbon cutting, guests and media cheered as a giraffe-spotted ribbon was cut, officially declaring the new habitat open. The moment marked an exciting upgrade for the zoo’s 30-year-old Africa section and a meaningful improvement for both visitors and the giraffe herd.

A New Home for the Giraffes
The new Giraffe Crossing habitat is a standout facility for both zoo guests and the animals. The space includes a large indoor habitat directly connected to the outdoor yards, allowing the giraffes to move between their indoor and outdoor environments. A large sliding door gives the herd the option to spend time inside or outside, depending on weather and comfort.
This is a big change from the previous setup. Before the new facility opened, the giraffe barn and savanna habitat were separated by a quarter of a mile, and the giraffes had to navigate a long corridor to reach the guest viewing area. Because of that layout, giraffe viewing was limited and highly dependent on ideal weather conditions.
Now, guests will be able to view the giraffes year-round and in a wider range of weather conditions.
Year-Round Giraffe Viewing in Kansas City
One of the most exciting parts of Giraffe Crossing is the indoor viewing area. The new indoor shelter gives guests an up-close look at the giraffes, making it easier for families to enjoy the animals even on days when the weather is less than perfect.
Inside, the giraffes have increased space, natural substrate and room to roam together comfortably. The habitat also includes multiple gated areas, allowing zookeepers to safely separate members of the herd for veterinary care, training or individual attention when needed.
The new design also makes it easier for the animal care team to feed the giraffes and provide enrichment, which helps keep their bodies and minds healthy.
Future Giraffe Feeding Experiences
Guests will soon be able to feed giraffes from both the indoor and outdoor viewing areas. The giraffes are still being trained and acclimated for this new experience, but the option is expected to be available in the future.
Once available, the feeding stations will give families another interactive way to connect with the giraffes and learn more about this endangered species.
Family-Friendly Amenities at Giraffe Crossing
The newly constructed guest area was clearly designed with families in mind. The path is stroller-friendly, and picnic tables offer a great view of the giraffes, making this an easy and enjoyable stop during a day at the zoo.
Convenient amenities include ADA-accessible restrooms, changing tables, a universal changing table, toddler seats and a nursing mother’s room. A new concession stand will also be available near the midpoint of the Africa pathway loop, filling a helpful need for families exploring that section of the zoo.
Between the year-round viewing, stroller-friendly path, nearby restrooms and future feeding opportunities, Giraffe Crossing is set up to be one of the most family-friendly stops at the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium.
Learning About Giraffes
Giraffe Crossing also gives the zoo new opportunities to educate guests about giraffes and conservation. The zoo plans to expand its partnership with global organizations working to protect giraffes in their native habitat and add giraffe-themed curriculum to its educational programming.
For kids who love animals, this new habitat is more than a place to see giraffes up close. It is also a chance to learn about how these endangered animals live, what they need to thrive and why conservation matters.
