I was halfway to my meeting when I realized I hadn’t brushed my teeth. Nice. Unfortunately, I do that kind of thing more often than I’d like to admit. In fact, I’ve been suffering from “Mommy Brain” for the past six years.
My first real episode of “Mommy Brain,” which to me means being constantly distracted, happened when I was pregnant with my oldest child. One day I noticed that I had shaved only one of my legs. Fortunately, I was wearing pants, so I was the only one who knew of my little mishap, but it still struck me as odd. How in the world did I do that? I’m still not sure.
These days it’s easier to understand how I could forget to brush my teeth. After all, I have three little ones to get out the door each morning. My oldest is a kindergartner which means she still needs quite a bit of supervision to get going in the morning. We’re four weeks into the school year and we’re still working on fine tuning our morning routine.
I’m grateful that motherhood has given me the ability to laugh at myself in addition to the dreaded “Mommy Brain.” Yesterday, for example, I joked with other women at my meeting that I had indeed forgotten to brush my teeth. I reassured them that I would simply drink more coffee in order to have coffee breath to disguise my morning breath.
Sure, I’d like to be the mom who always has it altogether. Reality means I should probably toss some breath mints into my purse and do my best to keep my sense of humor.
Have you had any “Mommy Brain” moments lately? Come on, fess up. I can relate!
