Maternity clothes. How they've changed! And, as a mom expecting my third, I'm SO glad they have!
I remember when my mother was expecting my sisters in the mid-80s. She would often complain about maternity clothes. It was the trend to dress the mom like the baby in "Baby Doll dresses" reminiscent of Cabbage Patch Kid outfits with long billowy tops. Or with embarrassing "Baby On Board" signs. If you don't remember these styles, here is a sample:
A few weeks ago I visited About Nine Months (12012 West 87th Street, Lenexa, KS, 913.563.7875, www.aboutninemonths.com/) to get a few tops for colder months (my other girls had August and September birthdays, so I didn't have many long sleeved options).
It was actually fun to look at maternity clothes! Somewhere between 1980 and 2000, someone finally "got it." I love that women can now walk into a maternity store and see clothes in styles they would ordinarily wear! Stylish jeans, skirts, and tops that are form fitting and don't leave a breeze blowing are such a relief!
This weekend, we attended a birthday party for my daughter's friend and there were a couple expectant moms... several of the other moms complimented the maternity outfits and just how cute everything is now.... and they REALLY meant it, they weren't just "being nice." Wow! How far we've come from getting sympathy from peers that you "have to wear that" until junior is born!
I don't know who finally figured out that expectant moms are grown women who would like to look nice and feel comfortable when expecting, but whoever you are... THANK YOU! Thanks for finally 'getting it.' Pregnancy comes with enough aches and ailments without having to wear a "Big Top" everywhere you go!
