Has all the holiday cheer got you stressed out? Do you need a break? If you answered yes to these questions, keep reading! Why not give yoga a try?
There are several types of yoga, but Hatha is the most commonly practiced type in the United States. Hatha is an all-encompassing term that refers to the practice that teaches physical postures.
Not only will yoga help you relax, but research shows a direct link between practicing yoga regularly and specific health benefits. In fact, some may suggest that yoga provides between 50 and 100 single benefits for our overall health and well-being. Yoga might:
- Increase circulation
- Relieve pain
- Enhance respiration
- Stimulate adrenal and immune function
- Maintain muscle and body mass
- Counteract stress
- Help with conditions such as anxiety and depression
Yoga is convenient, affordable and portable. Regardless of your health status, it is generally safe. Remember, if one pose is difficult, you don’t have to do it. There are classes at community centers and fitness clubs, as well as free-standing yoga studios. If that doesn’t work into your lifestyle, visit the library or bookstore for a book or DVD to use at home. However, before you begin your yoga practice, please check with your doctor to assure your safety.
Melanie Yunger is a local mom and nurse practitioner who practices yoga twice a week.
