Baby steps. There’s no need to grin and brrr cabin fever when you can embark on one of KC’s winter strolls. From climate-controlled malls to paths with wind protection, these routes provide opportunities to venture out safely and snugly.
Maybe you’re looking to pace yourself with an indoor loop. Or maybe you’re ready to embrace the outdoors after binge-reading There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather. Here’s your rundown of the best winter strolls in Kansas City.
Indoor Stroller Loops
When the thermometer drops or noses drip, relive the heyday of hanging out at the mall. Call a friend and meet up to lap Oak Park Mall. Choose short circuits on one level or make it a longer walk by exploring the upper and lower levels. Storefronts, escalators and fountains provide endless visual stimulation while you rack up steps without worrying about icy sidewalks or fading daylight.
Even friendlier to young families is Crown Center. With its wide corridors and seasonal décor, this shopping center carries a touch of magic that brightens dreary days. Roll by Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant or Chip’s Chocolate Factory, where the sweet scents and candy-making might tempt you to treat yourself at the end of your leisurely trek. There’s also Showplace, an interactive space for temporary children’s exhibits. Time the nap just right, and you can walk through the Hallmark Visitors Center for a free look at the history of this iconic KC company. Just remember to tuck that parking slip into the stroller so a Crown Center shop or restaurant can validate two hours of free parking.
Other fun options to mosey through are Scheels in Overland Park and Bass Pro Shops (locations in Independence; Kansas City, Kan.; and Olathe). Both stores bring the great outdoors in. Your little one will marvel at the waterfall, massive fish tanks and “taxidermy zoos” at Bass Pro.
For you sports fans, The College Basketball Experience at T-Mobile Center offers something completely different. The interactive museum showcases basketball history with open exhibit halls and engaging displays. Parents with babies can enjoy the stroller-accessible layout and lively atmosphere.
Families near Gardner will appreciate New Century Fieldhouse, one of the largest indoor sports facilities in Johnson County. Weekdays from 10:00-1:00, the turf field becomes a community walking track. Nine laps equal a mile, and the casual atmosphere is perfect for chatting while you walk. Check ahead — hours can shift due to rentals or special events.
Personally, I’m a fan of the loop at Sobela Ocean Aquarium at the Kansas City Zoo. The glowing jellyfish displays are mesmerizing, and even on busy days, there’s a calm that comes from being surrounded by slow-moving sea turtles and circling sharks. Make the round again and again from the warm shallows to the rocky shores.
Best of Both Worlds
Some days call for a wintery mix: fresh air to wake little cheeks, then a warm retreat. These spots let families decide how adventurous they want to be.
Union Station tops the list for fellow indoorsy parents like yours truly. The expansive concourses and grand architecture make each stroll feel special. Explore seasonal exhibits, then head beneath the towering Liberty Memorial to the National WWI Museum. Outside, the Liberty Memorial Loop circles the grounds. The paved, stroller-friendly path is 1.7 miles and usually takes 40-50 minutes. Since there’s little wind protection, save it for a calm, mild winter day.
The Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park pairs well with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Wide paths wind through the iconic shuttlecocks and lead to stroller-friendly galleries inside, where world-class collections await in quiet, spacious rooms.
For a cozier, more low-key option, visit the Kansas City Public Library — Central Branch. The children’s area and reading nooks provide restful pauses during your walk. Outside, the famous giant book facade makes a whimsical backdrop for a stroller selfie, and the adjacent grounds allow for a short outdoor loop when the weather is tolerable.
Hidden in Parkville lies Kansas City’s most unique path! Park University’s underground walking/running paths stay temperate year-round, making them ideal for stroller walks in any weather. These limestone corridors offer protected, smooth paths that are open to the public during non-peak hours. If skies are clear, you can cover more ground above on an outdoor loop across campus.
Outdoor Winter Strolls
A favorite memory is bundling my baby up before we set out to enjoy the winter wonderland. Mittens over tiny hands, a fleece hat with bear ears on his 98th-percentile head (I will never forget) and a blanket tucked under his drooly little smile. His wide blue eyes were taking it all in.
This year, I’m looking forward to showing him Park Place in Leawood and stopping to point out the ice skaters gliding on the rink in Barkley Square. The trees stay lit in the most magical way, and the surrounding buildings provide welcome wind protection. Park Place’s compact layout makes it easy to navigate, which is ideal on colder days.
Similarly, the Country Club Plaza and Zona Rosa offer urban strolls framed by striking architecture. The Plaza’s Spanish-inspired buildings and tiled walkways create a storybook-like atmosphere. Zona Rosa’s bright facades and public art installations make each turn visually engaging. In both spots, the streets and building layouts help block the wind.
For a more nature-filled escape, try the quick 1.6-mile loop at Loose Park. The pavement winds around the pond and beneath mature trees that offer partial wind protection.
Baby steps in the right direction are still steps worth taking. While you’re out this winter, I dare you to catch a snowflake on your tongue. It’s easy to focus only on creating a good experience for your baby, but don’t forget to savor it yourself — these moments belong to both of you.
