The Atkins-Johnson Farm is a historic house museum on nearly 22 acres of preserved farmland. The site includes heirloom gardens, walking trail, historic community cemetery, orchard, barns, beehives, pump-wells, and original farm outbuildings. The farmhouse itself contains a uniquely preserved early 1830s-era log cabin. The evolving farmhouse was home to the Allen, Hightower, Atkins, and Johnson families before it was purchased by the City of Gladstone, MO in 2005. After years of research, fund-raising and renovations, The Atkins-Johnson Farm and Museum opened to the public on April 27, 2013.
Each year the museum hosts unique community events and special programs including Children’s Garden Day, afternoon tea, tours of the Big Shoal Cemetery, Civil War encampments, guest speakers, holiday events, and much more. Changing exhibitions inside the house vary each season and offer visitors a new experience each time they visit.
