Cosmosphere Camps: The Thrill of Space. The Fun of Camp.
Send your child to space this summer! Or at least the next best thing at Cosmosphere Camp in Hutchinson, KS. Activities include simulated space missions aboard an Orion-based spacecraft, programming robots, flying drones and even flying a real airplane! All that and a chance to hang out with new likeminded friends are just some of the things students love about Cosmosphere Camps. Register today!
2022 Themes:
- Solar System: Entering 3-4 Grade. 5 half-days. $199 + $70 registration fee. Enjoy half-days of engaging activities at the Cosmosphere. Campers will gain a greater understanding of our solar system learning about the planets, stars, space travel, teamwork and hands-on science activities.
- Lunar Base: Entering 4-5 Grade. 5 Half Days. $199 + $70 registration fee. Campers discover the exciting challenges of living on the Moon and explore past, present and future lunar missions.
- Alien Adventure: Entering 5-6 Grade. 5 Days. $299 + $70 registration fee. Campers create their own alien life form, decode alien messages, observe microscopic organisms and explore the possibilities of environments beyond Earth.
- Starship Earth: Entering 6-7 Grade. 5 Days / 1 Overnight. $349 + $70 registration fee. Campers learn more about Earth’s life systems as they consider how humans survive in space. Camp includes visits to the Dillon Nature Center, Hutchinson’s Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Center, and Strataca: KS Underground Salt Museum to gain insight that will aid in the construction of their own base somewhere in the solar system. Starship Earth campers spend one overnight at the Cosmosphere.
- Mars Academy: Entering 7-8 Grade. 5 Days / 4 Overnights. $499 + $70 registration fee. In Mars Academy, teams of campers will find out if they have what it takes to survive on Mars! Campers overcome the challenges of gathering life-sustaining resources while operating robotics and geocaching. After teams complete the Settlement Challenge, they will embark toward a low Earth orbit mission in Cosmosphere’s Astralis capsule-based simulator.
- Mission: Moon Shot: Entering 8-9 Grade. 6 Days / 5 Overnights. $699 + $70 registration fee. In Mission: Moon Shot, campers will work to successfully complete a mission to observe the Moon from Lunar orbit. Campers will launch high-powered rockets, program Spheros using JavaScript to send a coded message, and produce a press-conference where they will discuss their upcoming lunar mission. Building on life skills from previous camps, Astro Recruits will work to overcome obstacles and focus on career paths such as journalism and strategic communication, audio/video production, and IT systems.
- Mission: Astro Lab: Entering 9-10 Grade. 6 Days / 5 Overnights. $899 + $70 registration fee. As Astro Recruits progress toward their end goal of establishing life on another planet, they must first successfully live in outer space. In Mission: Astro Lab, campers will work as a team to send a crew using the Astralis space capsule simulator to the Astro Lab (a space-based experimentation station modeled after the real International Space Station). Campers will create unique experiments and send them as high as 80,000 ft in our High Altitude Balloon, and they will train like real astronauts when they learn how to SCUBA dive.
- Mission: Lunar Trek: Entering 10-11 Grade. 6 Days / 5 Nights. $1099 + $70 registration fee. Having proven that life is possible in outer space, in Mission: Lunar Trek, Astro Recruits shift focus to landing humans on the Moon. Campers will learn the principles of flight by practicing using flight sims and drones and then apply that knowledge to fly a powered airplane. They will then take a deep dive into building an underwater ROV (like the Remotely Operated Vehicles that helped bring up the Mercury Liberty Bell 7 Module and the F1 engines of the Saturn V) and work together to recover rocket parts from the depths of a pool.
- Mission: Martian Base: Entering 10-12 Grade. 6 Days / 5 Nights. $1,299 + $70 registration fee. Where is the ultimate summer destination? The planet Mars, of course! Now that campers have landed on the Moon, they are moving on to the next challenge: Mars. Learn what it takes to build and survive in a Martian Settlement. Talk with experts in the field. Visit Wichita State University's National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR). Create and build your own governments and compete to see whose settlement reigns supreme while running the simulation 650 feet underground at Strataca: KS Underground Salt Museum. Then relax and spend the night in the salt mine!
