Measles Case Confirmed in Kansas – What You Should Know
Health officials are working to let people know if they might have been near the person who has measles.
What are the symptoms of measles?
People who get measles usually feel sick 10 to 14 days after being around someone with the disease. The first symptoms include:
- A high fever (over 101°F)
- A cough
- A runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
A few days later, a red rash appears on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
How does measles spread?
Measles spreads very easily through the air when a sick person coughs or sneezes. The virus can stay in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours, so people can catch it even after the infected person has left.
How effective is the MMR vaccine?
The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) is the best way to prevent measles. It is very effective—two doses protect 97% of people from getting the disease. Doctors recommend kids get their first dose at 12-15 months old and a second dose at 4-6 years old. Most adults are already protected if they had the vaccine or had measles when they were younger.
What should I do if I or someone in my family shows symptoms?
If you think you or someone in your family has measles, stay home and call your doctor before going to a clinic or hospital. This helps prevent spreading the disease to others. If you have not been vaccinated and think you were near someone with measles, talk to a doctor as soon as possible.
Are there any recent measles cases in my area?
Since measles is highly contagious, staying vaccinated and informed is the best way to stay safe.
The MMR vaccine is available at our walk-in clinics in Olathe and Mission through the JOCO Health Dept.
