I was recently perusing an internet bulletin board and saw a thread in which retail employees were complaining about couponers. They were saying things like, "These people are just trying to rip the store off" or "They are working the system and stealing from us." I've also heard things about "greedy" couponers or that "only poor people should use coupons." I have heard it all. So often people who don't use coupons pass judgement on those of us that do and they feel the need to put down something they know nothing about.
But it got me thinking....ARE we ripping stores off? Is it "greedy" to get something for free with a coupon?
Well, simply put...no! You may not know this (I didn't until I really got into using coupons), but stores actually MAKE money on coupons! The manufacturer pays the store for the full value of the coupon plus a handling fee, so a coupon is better than cash to the store. If only those cashiers that act like the coupon is coming right out of their paycheck realized that I'm actually making MORE money for their store when I hand over the coupon!
The manufacturer benefits, too....they put the coupon out because they want you to buy their product to try it out. They hope that you will love it and keep buying it. It may cost them a few cents when you buy their product with a coupon, but in the long run if they gain a new customer, it is worth it for them.
And obviously we as consumers save money by using coupons, to it's a Win-Win-Win situation! Of course, this all depends on couponers using coupons ethically and appropriately. But as long as you are using a coupon for its intended product, everyone benefits.
Now, is it GREEDY to "work the system" and get something for free with a coupon? I say absolutely not. You are just using your savvy shopping skills to benefit your family! Of course, I do think there is a limit. Even if you can get something for free, I think it is better to just get what you and your family will use as opposed to clearing the shelf. That way the next person who comes in with their coupons will be able to get in on the deal, too!
So next time you hear grumbling behind you in line or get attitude from a cashier, hold your head high and congratulate yourself for being a savvy shopper!
