Now that school is back in session, soccer games are well under way and football season has begun, many families are feeling the crunch of time more than ever. Finding time and energy for exercising for some is especially difficult. I would fall into the "guilty" category of coming up short on time and energy as a stay-at-home mom of two young children. However, exercising regularly may just be the thing that I need to boost energy and even happiness.
'Good Housekeeping' stated in an article that a recent study showed that 25% of Americans don't get any exercise at all! On the contrary, people who exercised just 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week for 6 weeks reported a noticeable energy boost.
One great idea for finding some motivation to get moving (besides seeing yourself in the mirror) is to have a partner meet you at the gym or for a run. If that's too complicated, try exercising together as a family. Exercising does not need to be labeled as "going to the gym, running on the treadmill, and lifting weights." Get creative and have fun! Here are just a few ideas to get fit and have fun with the people living under your roof:
Turn off the electronics. Kids seem to be starving for their XBox or PS2 right when they walk in the door. Try sending them outside for a bike ride, basketball game, or family walk instead.
Check out KCP's Going Places for Active Ideas. KCParent magazine offers an array of activities for kids and teens alike. Search the magazine for events that involve some type of movement. Trade a movie night for a bowling night. Head to the zoo, Worlds of Fun or sign up for a 5K.
Classes. Local YMCA's and other fitness centers offer classes year round for all different age groups. Find a Tae Kwan Do class, sign up the kids for gymnastics, grab a girlfriend for some Zumba. Try something you've never done before; you just might really enjoy it!
Try an element of charity. There are constantly races for a good cause that you could sing your family up for. What a great way to give back to the community and enjoy some physical activity together! Head for the Cure in Lawrence is on October 2nd. Support brain cancer research and get moving!
