As the weather hints at spring, my thoughts are turning toward all the fun to be had in the warmer months. For me, part of that fun includes garage sales. Though I hope to never have one again, I do enjoy shopping at garage sales. In fact, I believe I enjoy shopping at garage sales a little too much.
You see, the warmer weather also puts me into spring cleaning mode. As I cleaned out my youngest daughter’s closet, I noticed that much of what I was getting ready to pass on were things we purchased at garage sales last spring and summer. Though I paid pennies on the dollar for these items, I couldn’t help but wonder if I’d been better off staying away from those fun garage sales. If we only used them for a year, did we really need them? (The items were mostly toys, not clothes.)
I think the problem is that I trick myself into thinking we need something because it’s such a good deal. Certainly I can’t be the only one this has happened to while at a garage sale or while walking by a 75% rack at a favorite store. I have friends who don’t seem to have this problem. They make a list and stick to it. Me? Not so much!
Okay, so maybe I can stick to a list at a store, but at a garage sale it’s nearly impossible for me. After all, if I keep it down to just the items we could really use, it may be many, many sales before I actually find what I want. Garage sales are unpredictable that way. During the search for items we could actually use, I find myself adding to our already too large game or book collection. Sound familiar?
Before the temptation of garage sales starts popping up, I just might have to decide to stay away! At least until I finish cleaning out the closets and basement!
How do you feel about garage sales? Are you able to be a wise shopper and actually get what you need when it comes to sales?
