Every once in a while, I see a child dressed in such a ridiculous outfit that I can’t help but smile and even mention how much I like the outfit. Do you know the kind of outfit I mean? Fairy wings with a red plaid dress, bright pink and yellow polka dot tights and purple rain boots anyone? Maybe a cape worn with a favorite hoodie, camouflage pants and cowboy boots sounds familiar?
However, sometimes seeing children sport these outfits does not make me smile. Of course, that’s because the child in the outlandish outfit is my kiddo and we’ve got ten minutes to get to church which is a twenty minute drive. Does that strike a chord with anyone?
The way I see it, somewhere between tutus, cowboy boots, tiaras, capes, and picture perfect outfits, there is a happy medium. There is a balance that allows children some room for creativity and parents some room for sanity. I’ve found a variety of ways to do this at my house, but of course none of them are foolproof. I’d love to know what you do when your child wants to wear her princess dress or his knight costume for the tenth day in a row.
How do you teach your children about wearing appropriate clothing?
