I know you still are working on breaking down your boxes from this year's holiday extravaganza, but it's time to out and possibly do some shoppping!! This is the time of year where you will find sale, after sale, after sale. However, it is so easy to get drawn in and end up over spending, even when it comes to sales. Here are four things to keep in mind when shopping.
Make a list of your 2011 gift giving events. Before you pick up that Nerf gun on clearance, take a look at who you have to buy for during 2011 (birthdays and holidays included). If you have no one on your list, then "Put the gun down" and walk away. Just because it is a great deal, doesn't mean it will still be one if it is something you don't need.
Here are some people to be sure to add to your list: teachers, coaches, delivery personell, family, neighbors, hairdresser....and your own family (of course). You can find some nice deals and just pack them away and pull them out when you decroate for the holidays 2011.
Don't overspend on holiday decorations. People tend to see holiday decorations on clearance and just buy, buy, buy. Make sure to take inventory of the items you really will need, such as wrapping paper, bows, boxes, tags, etc. If you need a new tree, then check them out - otherwise, turn and walk away.
Use your crystal ball to forsee clothing needs. I know that this can be hard, but most of the time, you can probably predict what size your child will be wearing next winter. Because clothing is marked down so drastically, it is a great time to get things that you will need for them a year from now. I've already started shopping ahead for my 3 kids for winter 2011....and saved a ton!
Stick with cash. Just because you find great deals doesn't mean you should put it on plastic just so you can take it home. Make sure that what you are spending still fits within your budget and don't just put it on the credit card "because it's a good deal." Remember, if you end up paying even $0.01 in interest, then your good deal is starting to cost you money.
Just keep your spending in check so that you don't quickly end up with buyer's remorse. Make your plan and stick to it and your good deals will still make you smile!
