It's the call that ever parent dreads...our babysitter was cancelling just two hours before we were supposed to meet some old friends who were only in town for the weekend. We had a lovely evening planned...we were meeting at a fancy restaurant that has great food, a great atmosphere, and is most definitely not kid-friendly. We were going to get dressed up, have a couple of glasses of wine, and enjoy some adult conversation. But now...no babysitter. :(
We went back and forth...should we go out earlier and bring the kids? Should we meet for brunch the next day? Our friends were only in town for two nights, so we didn't have the luxury of postponing to next Saturday. We finally decided to have our friends come over to our house after the kids were in bed. They offered to pick up take-out from the restaurant we were planning to meet at and we grabbed a bottle of wine out of the fridge.
And guess what...it ended up being even better than the evening we had planned! Because we were at home we were able to talk about anything and everything and not worry about talking over everyone else at the restaurant. We didn't have to worry about taking up a table too long, we didn't have to pay $9/glass for wine. It was so nice to catch up and laugh the night away with good friends.
It just goes to show you that sometimes when something derails your plans it isn't always going to end in disaster! A night at home can be just as special and enjoyable as a night out on the town. This has inspired me to have more date-nights at home with just the two of us, too. Who says you have to get a babysitter everytime you want to have a nice evening together?
