Regular readers of this blog know that our family recently moved. Our new home is 'new to us' and was lovingly cared for and updated in many ways by the former owners, but there is always some finetuning to do. So, in a quest for some miscellaneous items needed, both in terms of furnishings / supplies we took off to Habitat for Humanity's Restore.
There are four ReStore locations in the metro. Each store is a resale outlet where donated goods, i.e. home remodeling materials - everything from hardware, tile, and carpet to the proverbial kitchen sink, and furnishings, are sold at a fraction of retail. This is a great way to buy inexpensive materials and reuse supplies that may otherwise wind up in a landfill, but the proceeds also benefit local Habitat for Humanity affiliates to fund the construction of Habitat homes within the community. Good for the budget, good for the environment, and good cause for the community! Truly a win-win-win!
If you're working on a home project, you'll find paint, carpet squares, tile, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, hardware, some countertops, windows, doors, and much more. The catch is that the store is stocked completely from donations, so you never know what you'll find - but you know the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." TIP: Watch the Habitat ReStore Kansas City Facebook page for photos of some items and inventory... you'll find truly unique and inspiring treasures.
On our recent "treasure hunt" (as we refer to trips to ReStore) we scored a giant bulletin board for our classroom (we homeschool) and some shelving. I also purchased brand new doormats for $2/ea (equal to those for $15-20 at our neighborhood box store) and a mirror. I found many pieces of furniture, shelving, and other items that had potential for talented artists and decorators with "an eye for style" - and promised myself I'd be back on more treasure hunts in the future!
If you're looking for inexpensive ways to upgrade or update your home or office, ReStore is a great place to look - every bit we do to repurpose and reuse is great stewardship of our environment, and all of the profit goes straight to a worthy cause!
