(SPM Wire) Cribs are intended to last for years (or multiple births). So the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association suggests these safety tips to sustain the lifespan of a crib:
* Infants should ALWAYS sleep in a crib meeting Federal and ASTM standards.
* Check for missing, loose or improperly installed screws or hardware.
* Follow all instructions provided. If they aren't clear, call the manufacturer.
* Under no circumstances should substitute hardware be used.
* When disassembling, retain all parts and instructions.
* Always send in the product registration card (most manufacturers offer this service online as well) to ensure you'll be notified if your crib is recalled.
Voluntary recalls to replace missing parts highlight the importance of proper assembly. Many older cribs don't meet current safety standards.
