This week there’s been a lot of talk regarding breast cancer due to the news that Angelia Jolie recently had a mastectomy because she carries the BRCA1 gene which puts her at a higher risk for both breast and ovarian cancer. Last fall we ran an article on the gene and profiled two local moms who both carry the gene and both opted to have preventative surgery. You can read the article here.
As with almost anything in the news these days, it has been scrutinized and discussed ad nauseum. But what I hope can come from all the discussion is a greater awareness of the gene and what options are available to women. Because let’s face it, I know that too often as moms, we put our own health low on the list of priorities. But it’s important that we take care of ourselves so we can be around and healthy for years to come.
