I started couponing and really bargain hunting about 2 years ago. And for the first 6 months I was on a ROLL getting bargains. I was snapping up things at a fraction of their regular prices left and right. Everytime there was a good deal to be had I was there! And as a result, our monthly spending really didn't go down as much as it could have. Instead of saving money, I was just getting MORE for my money. Which is fine, but the point of savvy shopping is more to save money than to fill the house with more stuff. So I have had to really change my point of view (and it is an ongoing process).
Yes, getting deals is awesome. The thrill of finding a hot item at 75% off is almost too good to pass up! And stockpiling is a good thing, too...why wait until you need toothpaste and spend full price when you can get it for free with coupons and hang on to it until you need it? But there comes a time when enough is enough. When I looked at my stockpile and realized that I had enough shampoo to last the next two years, I knew it was time to reign in the shopping.
And there is also the issue of being too focused on material things. It is super nice to be able to fill our home with things bought at a discount, but too much of a good thing can not only clutter your home, but also clutter your priorities. I have to admit that I have at times been more concerned with scoring a good deal on something than whether or not we really NEED the item. I have been working on being content with what we have instead of always striving for more.
Having less time to hunt for deals has helped me realize that it's okay to let deals pass me by. It's okay if I don't get that free tube of toothpaste or the extra pair of sandals at 75% off. Because really...we don't need it all. Enough is enough.
