Around our house, we’ve found that one of the best ways to get rid of something we no longer need, is to place it by the curb a day or two before trash day. More often than not, someone hauls away what was once our treasure.
Recently, we placed our crib in front of our house. After a little wood glue, it was almost as good as new. We didn’t know anyone who could use it, and due to safety regulations, we had a hard time donating the crib. It was gone within a few hours.
Now, you think I’d be sad, right? Well, I wasn’t. Despite my three babies learning to pull up in that crib, I just wasn’t attached to it. I was a bit teary eyed when my youngest outgrew it, but that had more to do with her getting older than with being said to see the crib go.
You’ll never guess what I did become sentimentally attached to! One of the hardest things for me to let go of was a refillable wipes container. It was red and had Winnie the Pooh and Piglet on the front. I bought it before my first child was born. I mostly bought it because it matched the nursery.
Three babies later, it had become something I used a lot. Eventually, my children were all potty trained and the container was moved to a table in the basement. It was there that I realized my attachment to it. I just couldn’t bear to toss it into the donation or trash pile.
The same has been true for our horribly worn copy of Goodnight Moon. It’s an oversized board book and has been repaired more than once. It sits on my youngest daughter’s shelf. We still grab it to read before bed. I can promise that that though I did finally part with the wipes container, that book will NOT leave this house on my watch!
How about you? What are you sentimentally attached to despite its worn condition or low monetary value? Please reassure me I’m not the only momma who is sentimental about the silly things!
