My mother-in-law is a huge Snoopy fan, so when we found out that Crown Center had a free Red Baron exhibit, we knew we had to go with her. She has loved Peanuts comics since she was a little girl and seeing Snoopy as the World War I Flying Ace has always been one of her favorite parts. Charles Schulz introduced this alter ego in 1965, and it remains one of Snoopy’s most iconic personas.

Snoopy and the Red Baron Kansas City
A Look Inside the Exhibit
This traveling exhibit dives into the history behind the Flying Ace, including how Schulz painstakingly researched World War I to ensure the comic strips were historically accurate. The gallery of reprinted strips feels just like reading the originals and seeing them all together really brings the storyline to life.
One thing that makes the Kansas City stop of this exhibit extra special is that Hallmark has contributed some of its own Snoopy memorabilia. As a fun touch, they also set up replica vintage TVs playing classic Peanuts specials, just like Grammy watched when she was young. Of course, they’ve added headphones to keep the noise down, but it was fun seeing my kids enjoy the same cartoons their grandmother grew up with.

Hands-On Fun for the Whole Family
The exhibit isn’t just about history—there’s plenty to see and do! One of my kid’s favorite spots was the photo op at Lucy’s iconic psychiatric booth, complete with fun props. The kids were dying to climb on Snoopy’s doghouse, though (understandably) that wasn’t allowed. Instead, there were cozy chairs where we could sit and read Snoopy books together.
The kids’ activities were a huge hit. They got to:
- Make their own red paper airplanes (which, of course, led to a competition to see whose flew the farthest!)
- Create their own comic strips
- Color Peanuts-themed pages
