I know it is early, but I can’t help but be excited by the tulip buds peeking out from our flower beds and purple berries popping out from the winding trail behind our backyard. I love spring! I love the promise of a new season, I love the chilly mornings and warm afternoons, and I especially love how the days get longer by just a tiny bit each day. Of course, we’ve had such a wonderful, mild winter we aren’t stepping out to play for the first time in months, but it is still fun to watch the seasons change. And during the spring you have so much to look for.
The girls and I love to take long walks on the nature trail behind our house and we look and listen for all kind of things. We see a lot of woodpeckers and owls, berry bushes and birch trees and chipmunks and squirrels. But even if you don’t have the chance to take a hike, you can look and listen for tons of things in your own backyard, at the park or even taking a walk to school.
So, I made a checklist of some of the things that we’ve found are most common in and around Kansas City – and you can make a game out of it! Print you list, grab some pencils and get outside! Circle everything you see and hear on each outing. Compare your findings on each outing, see how it changes as spring has sprung and eventually changes to summer. And enjoy!
