The only thing I love more than finding cute clothes for my son is finding cute clothes without paying full price. Kids grow out of their clothes at lightning speed, so shopping at local resale and consignment stores just makes sense. I like to visit several stores and shop multiple consignment sales throughout the year to refresh my son’s wardrobe each season.

As I browsed the inventory, I could tell how much care goes into selecting each item; everything was in great condition, without any stains, holes or tears. The first time I walked into Once Upon a Child, the store’s organization immediately stood out. Their clothing is neatly sorted by gender, size, style and even color, so if I’m looking for a gray, long-sleeve shirt for my 3-year-old son, I know exactly where to look. In addition to clothing, they also carry shoes, accessories, toys, books and all sorts of baby gear from strollers to bouncers. Every time I visit, I know I’m going to find something for my son at a great price.

The Overland Park location also offers extra savings each week: Every Tuesday is Tote Bag Tuesday, which means you get 20% off everything you can fit in your Once Upon a Child tote. If you have younger babies, you’ll want to shop on Teeny Tiny Thursday, when you can get 30% off all 0’12 month clothes and shoes. A few other children’s resale shops I want to visit are Wild Child Resale in Liberty and Lee’s Summit, Kid’s Kloset in Smithville and Annie’s in Westport. I have heard wonderful things about each of these stores and can’t wait to check them out.

We are lucky to have so many amazing resale and consignment stores in the Kansas City area, but a few times a year, we get even luckier when consignment sales pop up. Rhea Lana and Just Between Friends are the biggest sales events in our area, and they both host multiple sales a year throughout the metro. These events are my favorite way to stock up on high-quality clothing, toys and more because of their huge inventory. No matter the age of your children, there is something for everyone at these sales.

5 Must-Visit Libraries in KC

Have you ever taken your child to your local library to play? Kansas City has so many wonderful libraries with incredible children’s areas. My 3-year-old and I love exploring different libraries to see what each one has to offer. Here are five of our favorite libraries that you should try to visit soon!

Mid-Continent Public Library: Green Hills | 8581 N. Green Hills Rd., Kansas City, Mo.

The Green Hills branch is one of my favorite spots to take my son because it truly has something for every child. The children’s area is spacious and filled with unique features that make each of our visits special. My son’s favorite part is the fruit cutouts in the wall-he loves reading in the apple, working on puzzles in the orange and climbing as high as he can in the banana. Once he’s made his way through each fruit, he heads straight for the play kitchen, where he usually gets to interact with other children since it’s so big. Once he’s done in the kitchen, we move over to the coloring table, where there’s always a big sheet of paper or coloring pages waiting. One of the things my son loves to do the most at this library is play on the computers, which have a great selection of educational games. He tries new games each time we visit, but his favorites are digital painting and musical instruments.

Pro Tip: Before we leave, we always make a stop at Novella Cafe. I like to treat myself to an iced latte, and my son looks forward to picking out a pastry. It’s the perfect way to end our library visit.

Kansas City Public Library: Central | 14 W. 10th St., Kansas City, Mo.

Whenever we’re looking to spend a couple hours at a library, our first choice is always the Central branch in downtown Kansas City. We park in the library garage, cross the street and head straight up to the children’s area on the second floor. As soon as we walk up the book-themed stairs, my son makes a beeline for the pretend ice cream shop, which is the first thing he plays with anytime we visit. We’ve been coming to this library for years and it’s still one of his favorites.

This library is a dream for children who love pretend play and building. My son bounces between magnetic tiles, Lego Duplo blocks, train tracks, puppets and more! After plenty of playtime, we move on to coloring, computer games and picking out books. Between the board books, easy readers and picture books, we always find books that we enjoy.

Pro Tip: One of the things I appreciate most about this library is that the entire second floor is dedicated to children, so grown-ups don’t need to worry about their children being too loud during playtime. No visit is complete without a stop at The Nook, the first-floor coffee shop run by The Prospect KC culinary students.

Kansas City Public Library: Plaza | 4801 Main St., Kansas City, Mo.

Another Kansas City Public Library we love for playtime is the Plaza branch. The moment we step into the children’s area, we’re greeted by beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with natural light, creating a warm and inviting experience. One of the first things my son goes for are the building toys, especially the jumbo blocks. There’s plenty more to explore, including puppets, puzzles and activity cubes, which are perfect for younger babies.

Pro Tip: A visit to this library means a stop at one of our favorite spots for a treat. You can’t go wrong with frozen yogurt from Yogurtini or a pastry and coffee from Mildred‘s!

Bonner Springs City Library | 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs

If your child loves trains as much as mine does, the Bonner Springs City Library is the perfect place to visit. The first time we walked in, my son was thrilled to see that the entire children’s section is train-themed: there’s a train busy wall, a train table and the family restroom is in a train caboose.

In addition to the train-themed fun, this library also has a play kitchen, puzzles and plenty of board books that are easy for young children to pick up and read. We spent almost two hours at the library the first time we visited because my son was having so much fun playing. He’s already looking forward to our next visit!

As of 2024, this library underwent a minor renovation, including updates to its children’s area. The train theme still exists, but some new interactive literacy panels and toddler play features were added to the space.

Pro Tip: To make the most of your trip, I recommend heading to historic downtown Bonner Springs. Our go-to spot there is Third Space Coffee, where we enjoy delicious coffee and yummy pastries while my son plays with the toys in the children’s area.

Olathe Public Library: Indian Creek | 16100 W. 135th St., Olathe

There is so much to see at the Indian Creek branch. Every time we visit, my son runs straight to the bubble wall, mesmerized by the floating bubbles and changing colors. Once we’re done checking out the bubbles, he heads over to the spacious children’s area. The two playhouses are always a hit and give kids plenty of opportunities for pretend play. With plenty of toys to choose from and a giant rug area that is perfect for young babies, there is something for every age.

Pro Tip: When we’re done playing inside, we head out to Indian Creek Park, which is just steps away from the library doors. This inclusive playground makes it easy for my three-year-old to play and explore!

Northland

My Play Café | 6529 N. Cosby Ave, Kansas City, Mo.

This cozy, family-friendly space is filled with engaging activities, including a wooden play set with slides, a play kitchen, a train table, ride-on toys and stations for imaginative play, such as a doctor’s office and dress-up area. There’s even a dedicated space with soft foam tiles and a baby gate for children aged 18 months and under. Plus, the café offers a full coffee and drink menu for parents.

Toddler Time at Above All Trampoline Park | 1927 Industrial Dr., Liberty

Almost every Wednesday and Friday from 10:00-noon, Above All offers a dedicated time for children ages 6 and under to jump and play safely. For just $7.99 per jumper (and a one-time fee of $2.99 for jump socks on their first visit), toddlers can enjoy a 60-minute jump session.

Busy Bean Play Café | 249 W. Mill St., Suite 101, Liberty

This warm, inviting space has a wooden structure that children can climb on and slide down, along with other climbing toys and a balance beam. This downtown library offers a wonderful children’s area on the second floor. Children can enjoy imaginative play with an ice cream shop, puppet theater and building toys, or get creative at the coloring table. The library also hosts family story time Tuesdays at 9:30 and 10:30, baby story time Thursdays at 9:30 and toddler story time Thursdays at 10:30. Stop by The Nook downstairs for coffee, tea or a pastry.

Let’s Play at Science City | 30 W. Pershing Rd, Kansas City, Mo.

Located on the lower level of Science City, Let’s Play is a space dedicated to children ages 3 and under, featuring a playhouse, train table, climbing area and snack area. There are also science-based experiences like a vertical wind tunnel, an air table and a ball drop. Infants can observe a fish tank or climb on soft blocks in the Babyscape area. On warmer days, kids can enjoy the elaborate outdoor play structure.

Hümanette | 118 W. 63rd St., Kansas City, Mo.

Hümanette is Kansas City’s first kinder café designed specifically for children ages 0-6. This indoor play space features a climbing and sliding structure and soft mats to encourage active play. Children can explore toys and books while a soft area ensures safe play for those who aren’t yet walking. The café includes a lounge with games and art supplies for older children. Parents can join in, relax with a drink from the full-service café or work in the co-working space, which also offers a private chat booth.

Jackson County

Mid-Continent Public Library: Colbern Road | 1000 NE Colbern Rd., Lee’s Summit

Children can read and play with giant letter tiles or a variety of toys in this welcoming library space. A large table offers plenty of room for coloring and activities. The library hosts toddler story time on Mondays at 10:00 and 11:00, family story time on Tuesdays at 10:00 and 10:30 and Wednesdays at 10:00, along with baby story time on Wednesdays at 9:15. You can also stop by Post Coffee inside the library for coffee and pastries.

Open Gym at Xtreme Gymnastics | 725 NW Commerce Dr., Suite X, Lee’s Summit

Every Friday from 9:30-11:00, Xtreme Gymnastics offers an open gym where preschoolers can stay active and work on their gross motor skills. Kids can run, bounce on trampolines and climb on mats in a safe space. Multi-aged open gym times are also available for the whole family.

Kanga’s Indoor Playcenter | 19700 E. Jackson Dr., Suite G, Independence

Kanga’s offers a dedicated toddler area with a mini playscape, ball pit, large building blocks and wall puzzles, ensuring hours of fun for little ones. Young children can also enjoy the multi-level indoor playground and inflatable bouncy attraction. There’s a café on-site if you’d like a snack or lunch during your visit.

Johnson County

Jumperoo at Urban Air | 8554 Maurer Rd., Lenexa, KS & 14401 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park

Jumperoo is a dedicated time for children ages 5 and under to safely enjoy the trampoline park. The Lenexa location offers Jumperoo every Thursday from 9:00-noon and Saturday from 8:00-10:00, while the Overland Park location hosts it every Friday from 9:00-noon and Saturday from 8:00-10:00. Children ages 2 and under jump for free (with a small fee for socks), and parents can join in at no cost.

Olathe Public Library: Indian Creek | 16100 W. 135th St., Olathe

The Indian Creek branch’s children’s area features a playhouse, play castle and play kitchen, as well as a selection of board books and picture books for young readers. Parents can grab a drink at Sweet Tee’s coffee shop located inside the library. The library also offers circle time for children 2 and under on Mondays at 1:00 and Thursdays at 9:30, with story time for ages 3-5 on Mondays at 1:45 and Thursdays at 10:15. An outdoor playground is available for extra fun on warmer days.

Splash with Me at Lenexa Rec Center | 17201 W. 87th St. Pkwy., Lenexa

Splash with Me at the Lenexa Rec Center is a time for children ages 5 and under to safely play in the water. Available Monday through Friday from 10:00-11:30 and Saturday from 9:30-11:30, it costs $2 per person for non-members. The area includes shallow water, a small water slide and a water play structure specifically designed for young children. Parental supervision is required.

Hop on the streetcar for a fun date that will take your mind off the cold January temperatures!

Stop 1: City Market-5th & Walnut

Harry’s Country Club isn’t actually a country club, but a neighborhood bar and restaurant frequented by socialites, the over-40 crowd and everyone in between. With roadhouse vibes, a jukebox, black-and-white photos, brick walls and an old mahogany bar, this place is like a warm hug. What will really warm you up is a bowl of their spicy chili accompanied by cornbread with honey butter-just one of the many choices on a menu full of pub fare and more.

Stop 2: Kauffman Center-16th & Main

In a building that dates back to 1908 sits Tom’s Town Distilling Co., named after political boss Tom Pendergast, who ruled the city from 1925 to 1939. Though Prohibition was in effect during most of Pendergast’s reign, alcohol flowed freely in Kansas City. Learn about this era and more on a tour of Tom’s Town. At the end, you can do a tasting of five of their spirits, including gin, vodka and bourbon. Or, if you don’t wish to imbibe, you can purchase a “designated driver” tour ticket. Either way, the tour is worth it!

Stop 3: Power & Light-14th & Main

What started out as a dorm room experiment has grown into a national sensation. And while we typically avoid national chain eateries, one that we enjoy is Insomnia Cookies. Hot, fresh, delicious cookies available for pickup or delivery from midday until well after midnight-what’s not to love? They offer classic, deluxe and limited-time cookies, such as sugar, double chocolate chunk, oatmeal raisin, s’mores, apple pie filled and oatmeal chocolate walnut, plus brownies and ice cream.
