Cooler weather has arrived in Kansas City, and it has brought an explosion of color with it! Here are some of the best parks for admiring the autumn scenery:
Kill Creek Park, Olathe. The observation tower in Kill Creek Park offers a bird’s-eye view of the splendor of autumn. From the tower’s vantage point, you can admire the orange-tinted trees and golden prairie grasses. Head down to the lake to watch for migrating birds, or explore the trails that wind through the woods. You’ll find 12 miles of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails, as well as 1.5 miles of shared-use paths for walking, jogging and cycling.
Leawood City Park, Leawood. This park provides access to the Tomahawk and Indian Creek Greenway Trails. The wooded trails are rich with fall colors, and the creeks that meander along the paths are frequented by wildlife. You can enjoy more autumn views at the park’s pond, which is rimmed by vibrant foliage.
Hidden Valley Park, Kansas City, Mo. Soak in the beauty of fall as you traverse Hidden Valley Park’s four-mile trail. Under the canopy of brilliantly-hued trees, you will hike beside a ravine that overlooks the hidden valley. If you prefer a more stroller-friendly walk, visit the park’s half-mile paved trail. This asphalt path offers picturesque views of the nearby trees.
Fleming Park, Blue Springs. Comprising nearly 8,000 acres of land, Fleming Park boasts a sweeping display of fall foliage. Lake Jacomo and Blue Springs Lake provide stunning waterside views of the autumn landscape, and the woods contain several miles of trails. Make sure to visit the Kemper Outdoor Education Center, where you can admire the seasonal beauty of wetland, woodland, prairie and cactus glade habitats.
Weston Bend State Park, Weston. From its colorful foliage to its tranquil riverside vistas to its lush wooded trails, Weston Bend State Park is perfect for an afternoon getaway. The park’s scenic overlook will treat you to a stunning display of the Missouri River. This park is also a prime picnic spot, so bring along a basket of your favorite autumn treats!
