Entering the Coterie Theatre for the Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) production of Finding Nemo feels like stepping into a vibrant oceanic world. Translucent jellyfish dangle from the ceiling, neon-lit fabric walls mimic the vivid hues of the Great Barrier Reef, and a soft blue light bathes the stage, creating the impression of an underwater scene. Children and adults gather around the perimeter of the stage—some in traditional seats, others behind or to the side—for a 360-degree immersive experience.
Kansas City is only the second U.S. city to host this unique adaptation, inspired by the beloved 2003 Pixar film. Vi Tran stars as Marlin, the overprotective father who loses his son, Nemo (portrayed by Ethan Suen on opening night), when he’s swept away and placed in a fish tank. Together with Dory, played with charm and humor by Franci Talamantez-Witte, Marlin embarks on an epic adventure, learning bravery and resilience as he searches for his son. Suen brings a heartwarming confidence to his role, shining among an adult cast, while Tran and Talamantez-Witte create a comically endearing duo.

The Coterie Theatre masterfully crafts the show to engage even the youngest viewers, using the entire space—including back entrances, aisles, and wings—to make the performance immersive. The TYA version also features captivating new music by an award-winning team, appealing to audiences of all ages. Stunning puppetry by What If Puppets brings beloved characters to life: Bruce, Chum, and Anchor, the lively sharks, sway and sing “Fish Are Friends, Not Food”; a larger-than-life seagull with a wide-opening beak adds humor; and Crush the sea turtle, skillfully maneuvered by two puppeteers, glides across the stage on his oceanic journey.
