Tip: Read on for a map to locate the best BBQ in KC!
What pops to mind when you think of Kansas City? Although it might be Superbowl Champions after our recent win, before that, it was probably barbecue. This smoky specialty is such an integral part of our city that not only can you smell it almost everywhere you go, you also can find it pretty much anywhere in the metro. From brisket to burnt ends to ribs and pulled pork, the tantalizing meat flavors are bound to make your mouth water. Here are just a few fan favorites:
Arthur Bryant’s
Arthur Bryant’s, known nationally, is the original KC barbecue, established in 1908. Arthur’s sauce has attracted many visitors over the years, including some famous personalities such as Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg. A must to visit when in KC!
Gates Bar-B-Q
Along with Arthur Bryant’s, Gates is another KC staple when it comes to good barbecue. The staff famously welcomes you in the door with a friendly, “Hi, may I help you?” Gates has six locations around the metro area; you are sure to find one close to you!
Zarda Bar-B-Q
In business for 40 years, Zarda won Best Burnt Ends in KC in 2018. While you’re there, be sure to check out Grandma Lucy’s famous baked beans, the Average Joe sandwich and the cheesy corn. Many menu items are gluten free as well.
Jack Stack Barbecue
For a more upscale barbecue atmosphere, head to Jack Stack, where you order from a waiter, instead of at the counter. Meats are cooked over hickory wood and even include beef or lamb ribs, instead of the typical pork.
Joe’s KC (formerly Oklahoma Joe’s)
Want to sample the same sandwich Paul Rudd flew to himself in NYC and Jimmy Kimmel ate on live TV? Pop into Joe’s and try the Z Man (with a side of perfectly seasoned fries, of course). If you can make it to Joe’s, be sure to go to the original spot—located in an old gas station!
Q 39
Q 39 is the newest kid on the block but has zoomed to popularity quite quickly since opening in 2014. With a restaurant-style atmosphere similar to Jack Stack, their modern barbecue menu offers a variety of unique dishes from a classically trained chef. You’ll find something for everyone here but in case you can’t decide, try the Mr. Burns sandwich!
Slap’s (Squeal Like a Pig)
After their success in competitive barbecue, these two brothers finally made their dream of opening a restaurant a reality. Their competitive side hasn’t slipped though, as they still compete 25 to 35 times each season, as well as taking second place in the TV show BBQ Pitmasters.
*The list could go on, of course, but for more quality barbecue options, check out Johnny’s, Haywards and Jones.
Julie Collett moved here 20 years ago, and Zarda was her first taste of KC barbecue!
