The Midwest Trust Center for the Performing Arts at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas, hosts world-class performances throughout the year, including live music, theater, magicians, comedians, dancers and international performances. The Kansas City Repertory Theatre performs on two KCMO stages, one on the UMKC campus near the Country Club Plaza and the other in the Kansas City Power & Light District. Both shopping districts are home to dozens of excellent restaurants appealing to any palate. Check out these upcoming shows: Little Shop of Horrors, April 30-May 19, lets you feed the need for musical hilarity with this delicious sci-fi smash about a man-eating plant. Once, Sept. 3-22, features gorgeous songs like the Oscar-winning “Falling Slowly.” The transformative power of love and music in Once will uplift you to a world where every note tells a story, and every song becomes a journey of the heart. Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Oct 8 -27, is a Tony Award-winning play about the life and music of the iconic Billie Holiday. And be sure to catch the KC holiday tradition of A Christmas Carol, Nov. 21-Dec. 24.
Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts
You’ll find year-round performances at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown Kansas City, including Trailblazing Talks, symphony, opera, ballet and live theater. Los Tules, one of the most authentic and delicious Mexican restaurants in town, is right across the street.

The Coterie is Kansas City’s professional children’s theater, located on the first floor of Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri. This year, enjoy Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed April 2,-May 19. Based on the beloved children’s book by Mo Willems, this is a charming rock ’n’ roll parable that uses energetic songs and quirky characters. Take in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, June 18-Aug. 4. The beloved Roald Dahl story takes audiences on a mesmerizing joyride through a world of pure imagination. Crown Center is home to many fantastic restaurants, but all-time faves for the kids will always be Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant where trains deliver food to your table, Spin, a delicatessen and pizzeria, and Unforked, a fast-casual restaurant serving food crafted from local organic ingredients as much as possible.
Little ones also delight in Theatre for Young America’s live plays at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri. The upcoming season includes Goldilocks and the Three Bears (April 9-May 4) and more great shows throughout the year. Stop at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for a treat before or after the show or enjoy lunch at Harvey’s at Union Station, where you can savor classic American fare.
