This month marks the arrival of spring. As thoughts turn to the outdoors, take advantage of this opportune time to visit the library. Yes, you read that right. It’s the perfect time to visit the Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library. The library is part of the KCK Public Library System and is located on the shores of Wyandotte County Lake. Plan a visit to learn more about the local environment.
Before You Go
Prior to your visit, check the library’s calendar of events. You’ll find free educational programs for all ages. Ask your children what they’d like learn. Let them help guide you as you plan your adventure. Spend time putting a scavenger hunt together. Besides what they want to learn, ask your children what they expect to see. This activity is sure to get them excited about their library visit. Consider packing a lunch so that you can enjoy a picnic at Wyandotte County Lake Park.
While You’re There
You will find snakes, turtles and more on display in the library. Be sure to check out the LaMasney Discovery Cabinet. Named after one of the library’s early volunteers, the cabinet holds treasures such as snake skins, fossils, furs and antlers. Visitors may touch the items. Before hitting the nature trail, browse the extensive collection of science and nature books. Make any last-minute changes to your scavenger hunt and then enjoy the trail.
When You Get Home
Once home, read the books you checked out or, for those who aren’t patrons of the KCK Public Libraries, locate science and nature books at your local library. For children enthralled with all things nature, check out the Mr. & Mrs. F. L. Schlagle Library Junior Naturalist Program. The library will offer various summer camps for children as young as 3. Finally, be sure to check out our Guide to Kansas City’s nature centers. Before long, your young naturalists may have quite the nature collection of their own, providing your family with your own environmental learning center.
