Library Launches New Reading Rocket
Library Launches New Reading Rocket
This month, Mid-Continent Public Library will celebrate the launch of its brand-new Reading Rocket, a state-of-the-art outreach vehicle that provides literacy services to children and families across the Kansas City metro. Library officials and community members will mark the start the new Rocket’s orbit with celebrations on July 18 and 19, including refreshments, activities, and tours.
“This new vehicle is a major upgrade from our previous Rocket, which was well-loved and needed to be retired,” said Reading Rocket Manager Lisa Campbell. “Our team connects local families with important Library services every day, and the new Rocket will ensure we’re able to continue our work in the community for years to come. We’re so grateful for this upgrade and hope folks will come celebrate with us!”
The Reading Rocket Launch Celebrations will be held:
- Thursday, July 18, 9:00–11:00 a.m. at Zona Rosa (8640 N Dixson Ave Kansas City, MO 64153)
- Friday, July 19, 9:00–11:00 a.m. at CommunityAmerica’s Hickman Mills Community Access Center (11501 Blue Ridge Boulevard Kansas City, MO 64134)
Both events will have family friendly activities and offer the opportunity for customers to take tours of the Rocket and meet the Rocket’s crew as they give away Library fine forgiveness coupons (while supplies last). Friday’s event will feature a performance by children’s musician Dino O’Dell, a visit from KC Wolf, and will give adults the chance to connect with staff at CommunityAmerica’s Hickman Mills Community Access Center as well as representatives from Literacy KC and Metropolitan Community Colleges, Kansas City.
The new Reading Rocket was purchased by the Library last year and offers free Wi-Fi, a roomy, updated interior, including seating and a sink for Library events, and ample storage both inside and out. The vehicle has already begun its rotation of regular visits to neighborhoods, childcare facilities, schools, parks, and other community locations where staff offer storytimes and other early literacy programs and resources as well as give away “forever books” for children to build their home libraries.
