Shatto Dairy Farm
This week I went with Ally and her play group to the Shatto Dairy Farm for a tour. I had been several years ago with both girls and we really enjoyed ourselves and this time was just as much fun!
If you haven’t been, I highly suggest you take the time for a visit. We are in Lenexa and it took us just over and hour to get there. Everything about the tour and visit is first class. From the unlimited refills on flavored milk samples to the unhurried time spent feeding and brushing the baby calves, it is a wonderful experience.
Being a city girl I find the whole process fascinating. I think Ally would have been happy to just have the samples (we even got to try the Shatto ice cream-yummy!) and see the cows, but I really enjoyed seeing the bottling process and learning all about milk. For instance, did you know that they remove all the fat from the milk, make the skim milk and then add fat back into the milk to make 1% or 2%? Did you know all cheese is white when it is made and then coloring is added to it? You don’t want me to describe how they do pregnancy tests on the cows, but who knew?
After our tour we enjoyed a picnic lunch in the gazebo on the grounds. The day was a success in the eyes of my four-year-old because she got ice cream samples and saw a cow poop. It’s really all about the simple things in life.
