Morning routine with two kids under three: get up, get everyone dressed and fed, make it to library story time by 9:30. For a solid year, we did this every Monday (and sometimes Friday) without fail. Let me tell you, we loved it. Not only me, but my girls too. The upbeat music, bubble machine, parachute activity and books brought to life with felt pieces on the storyboard — it can’t be beat. We’d finish each morning by checking out a few books to read throughout the week, only to return them the following Monday.
If you’re a mom of babies and toddlers, repeat after me: the library is your best friend. Here are our top three unique libraries for little ones — and yes, they all come with an amazing lineup of story times.
Olathe Public Library: Indian Creek Branch
This library truly has it all — starting with the coffee shop right up front, which is perfect for grabbing a snack or a hot cup of coffee to sip while your little ones play.
The Indian Creek branch feels less like a quiet reading room and more like a children’s wonderland. One of its most popular features is the bubble wall — tall tubes where bubbles dance and colors shift, creating a calming yet playful glow. It’s my girls’ favorite spot and the first thing they run to every visit.
Another favorite is the interactive light wall, where little hands can twist and turn panels to change colors. It’s an engaging way to practice color names and patterns while sparking creativity.
The wooden play structures here are every toddler’s dream. It’s almost like visiting a play cafe — except it’s free! There’s a pretend playhouse with a tiny kitchen stocked with pans and play food, a cozy fort with an overhang for climbing or hiding, and even a wooden play car with a trunk big enough for Mom to sit in. Babies have their own soft, colorful area with low shelves of toys and board books perfect for tiny hands. A low couch nearby makes it easy to read or play together, and child-sized tables nearby are ideal for coloring or snack time.
Just outside, you’ll find a playground only steps from the entrance, which is perfect for burning off energy before heading home. On a mild winter day, it’s the perfect spot for a quick outdoor break.
In short: if your kiddo loves bubbles, lights and imaginative play, Indian Creek is a can’t-miss stop that proves libraries can be just as lively and fun as any play space.
Johnson County Library: Central Resource Branch
This is another family favorite that truly can’t be beat. I love this library because it’s all on one level, making it perfectly accessible for small children and stroller-friendly for parents juggling diaper bags, snacks and story time schedules. It even has a drive-thru book return and hold pickup, which is a lifesaver when you don’t want to unload the kids just to grab your next stack of books.
The children’s section, located toward the back, is sprawling and full of personality. My girls love the funky furniture — chairs shaped like chicks, wavy couches and wobble stools — that double for both seating and play. Along one wall, there’s an interactive play station where kids can slide windows, turn gears and peek into mirrors. Low shelves make picture books and board books easy for toddlers to reach, and toddler-height tables are stocked with rotating educational toys to keep things fresh.
The highlight of this branch is the large play area in the back filled with giant orange foam building blocks — soft, durable and endlessly fun. My girls have spent countless afternoons building forts, creating obstacle courses and giggling through puppet shows at the occasional puppet theater station.
When the weather’s warm, we like to wrap up our visit at Strang Park, which sits just behind the library. It’s one of the best parks around for babies and toddlers — it’s completely fenced, mulch-free and has adorable playhouses designed just for little ones. It’s the perfect way to finish a morning of reading and play.
Johnson County Library: Lenexa City Center Branch
We live in Johnson County, so while we enjoy the occasional trip downtown, we don’t often get that true urban experience. Thankfully, when we’re craving a bit of that metropolitan feel, the Lenexa City Center library delivers.
This sleek, modern library sits between the Lenexa Rec Center and the Public Market, with a lively courtyard of soft turf that’s perfect for running and rolling on nice days. Access is easy through the parking garage, which connects directly to the library — my girls always race to see who gets to push the elevator buttons. Because of this setup, it’s wonderfully stroller-friendly — we just load up our books in the basket of the stroller and go.
KC Parent Pro Tip: Bring a coat in the colder months! The short walk from the garage through the courtyard can be chilly.
The children’s area is located on the second floor (the same level as the garage entrance) and is bright and cheerful, with orange and green walls and whimsical 3D, house-shaped reading nooks. Toddler-height tables hold puzzles, crayons and toys, while a rotating local child’s collection in a glass display case always sparks curiosity — past exhibits have featured dinosaur figurines, Lego creations and Squishmallows.
Story time takes place in a cozy back room with an adorable child-sized door, where kids sit on colorful cushions as a friendly librarian reads and sings through the morning. Families also love the scavenger hunt, which changes themes throughout the year and gives kids a fun reason to explore the whole library.
On warmer days, we like to visit the patio overlooking City Center — it’s a great spot for a snack or a quick workbook session. My three-year-old often practices tracing letters there while her sister “plays chess” on the oversized board nearby.
And for parents — this might be the best part — Lenexa City Center has a drive-thru window for holds and returns, making library trips with little ones easier than ever.
Tips for Parents Planning Visits:
- Time your visit around programs: Many libraries offer story times, crafts or sensory play events. Check their calendars ahead of time so you don’t miss fun extras.
- Bring layers: You might move between indoor play areas and outdoor courtyards or nearby playgrounds.
- Make it part of a day out: Indian Creek and Central Resource pair nicely with the playground; Lenexa City Center is next to the Public Market.
- Let kids lead: These libraries are designed for little hands and wandering curiosity. You’ll often discover new favorites just by following their lead.
- Ask the staff: Many branches offer rotating scavenger hunts, maker kits or pop-up surprises that aren’t immediately visible.
All in all, the Kansas City area has far more than your average library — it’s full of playful, imaginative, community-loving spaces where children can feel engaged and excited to return. Whether your child is bubbly and creative or quiet and curious, there’s a library here that fits his or her rhythm. Happy exploring!
