I am 41 and last time I checked, I was considered an adult. But it seems that as if in my mom's eyes, I am still, and will always be, a child. We recently traveled to St. Louis for a baptism. The lunch after the baptism was at my parents' home. They were going to be out of town and asked me to get the house ready for the party. This involved multiple phone calls instructing me on what I needed to do. Included in my responsibilities were picking up the food and cake, placing the drinks in the cooler and putting ice on the drinks and, well, that's about it. I seriously had no less than 5 calls regarding what I needed to do. The last call was telling me that mom had written everything she had told me in a note and placed in on the counter (so in case I forgot my two responsibilities, I would have a written reminder).
My dad tells a story of when he was younger (but still married an an adult). He was visiting his sister-in-law in the hospital after having a baby. He was on the phone with his dad, who gave him the room number. As soon as my dad hung up the phone, it rang, and it was his dad, instructing him that if he got lost and couldn't find the room, that he should ask for directions.
I am sure there will come a time when I do the same thing to my girls-once a child, always a child.
