We've all heard it. Now we're just waiting for it.
Piles and piles of snow are about to start falling our way, and if you've seen the gas stations and grocery stores in the last 2 or 3 days, you will see that Kansas City is gearing up for "Snowmaggedon."
Local weathermen have been predicting around 1 foot of snow, and for most people, that means staying put for a while without getting out to travel. While your safety is of utmost priority when the weather keeps you in, so is your sanity! And if you've got kids enjoying some snow days coupled with extra energy and excitement, here are some "survival" tips of how to survive the cold weather "indoors:"
Make cookies or some tasty treat together. I've always enjoyed making the classic sugar cookies with other people to see their creation with the icing and sprinkles. Equally as fun for the kids could be picking out a new recipe and making it together, then enjoying it over....
Movies! What would a blizzard be without some great flicks to accompany it? Let the kids build a fort in the living room, or maybe enjoy a special snack, to watch a movie of their choice.
Snow Crafts. There are many ideas and resources online that include clever and unique ideas for you and the kids to enjoy together. EverythingPreschool.com has an excellent comprehensive list that should keep you busy for a while!
Catch up on some great reading. Designate some book time for everyone during the blizzard. Allow the kids (and yourself included) to take a book anywhere in the house, with blankets and pillows if they'd like, and cuddle up with a good book in a nook! You could get lost for hours!
Get a jump on Valentine's Day crafts. Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and most likely if you have school-aged children, they've got some Valentine's cards to put together for their friends! Let this be the day that they start working on this task.
Let each child take a turn in creating an obstacle course for the family to play. You can get very creative with this one. Obstacle courses do not just have to be a physical task.
Create a family game tournament. Decide on a few games that you'd like to play as a family, create a bracket (like you would for NCAA March Madness), and let the competition begin!
Since Old Man Winter doesn't look to be leaving Kansas City anytime soon, please post other ideas and share your great survival tips!
