Plan a Family Day Trip to Leavenworth, Kansas
Just north of Kansas City, Leavenworth offers an easy family escape filled with small-town charm, historic streets and plenty of kid-approved stops. Known as the First City of Kansas, Leavenworth was founded in 1854 and is home to a 28-block historic district packed with locally owned shops, restaurants, museums and places to explore. Families can spend the day mixing indoor play, creative activities, sweet treats and outdoor fun, then return another time to discover attractions like the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum, Fort Leavenworth and the city’s many historic landmarks.
For our family’s visit, we set out to experience a few of Leavenworth’s kid-friendly favorites firsthand, and it quickly proved to be the kind of easy, fun-filled day trip worth repeating. From climbing and creating to burgers, ice cream and splash-pad play, here is how we spent our day in Leavenworth.
Stop 1: Start the Day at Rough & Bumble Indoor Playground
Start your morning at Rough & Bumble, an indoor playground where kids can climb, crawl and burn energy on the large honeycomb-style play structure while parents enjoy coffee nearby. It is an especially great stop for younger kids or a rainy-day adventure.

Stop 2: Enjoy Sodas, Ice Cream and Art in Downtown Leavenworth
When everyone is ready for a treat, head downtown to First City Soda for handcrafted sodas, ice cream and old-fashioned soda fountain charm. Located alongside First City Creatives, it is easy to turn a sweet stop into a creative one. Check their schedule for art classes, workshops and open-making opportunities designed to inspire kids of all ages.

Stop 3: Browse Board Games and Collectibles at Gator’s Games and Hobby
Older kids, gamers and collectors will love browsing Gator’s Games and Hobby. Explore board games, trading cards, tabletop games, toys and more, then snap a photo outside with the colorful Mr. Spock mural.

Stop 4: Grab Classic Burgers and Shakes at Homer’s Drive In
For lunch or dinner, make a stop at Homer’s Drive In, a Leavenworth favorite since 1931. Order classic burgers, fries and milkshakes for a nostalgic meal the whole family can enjoy.

Stop 5: Cool Off at Hawthorn Park Splash Pad
Wrap up the day at Hawthorn Park, where kids can cool off at the splash pad, climb on playground equipment and enjoy room to run. Bring swimsuits and towels, then settle in for one more round of family fun before heading home.
