Christmas is Coming

Well, here we are a week before Christmas. I think I have most of my shopping done and presents wrapped. I do still need something for my in-laws. Any suggestions? They are hard to buy for. Teacher gifts made and sent off to school, home decorated, cookies ready to be baked. I think I've covered most of my bases. The Christmas season always seems like a bit of a mad dash to me. I enjoy it but wish it weren't quite so busy. I had a nice reminder the other day of what is truly important during this time of year.

On Tuesdays I volunteer in my oldest daughter's school library. I enjoy getting the chance to see her during the school day and it's also a nice way to get to know her classmates. Last week the children were watching one of those old film strips (remember those?). I don't remember the title, but it was about Christmas (my daughter attends a parochial school). I was busy checking in books, when all of a sudden I heard the sweet sound of voices singing "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem". It was playing on the film strip and without anyone suggesting they sing, the whole class immediately started singing when they heard the song. It was so sweet and innocent and very heartfelt. I savored the fact that no one was self conscious about singing-they all sang along without any worry that they might be the only one singing. Hearing the impromptu caroling session helped to remind me to slow down and enjoy the season with my children and to remember what's really important during this time of year-celebrating the birth of Jesus.

As you make your final Christmas preparations, I hope you are able to steal a moment or two to slow down and enjoy all that wonder Christmas has to offer.
