Spring Editor's Letter

by

For 10 years I taught elementary school. After my older was born, I taught for one year, but then decided to stay home. I always imagined I’d be a stay-at-home mom, but I didn’t imagine how difficult it would be to make the transition. I was accustomed to being busy all day long as a teacher. As a mom, I was busy, but it was a different kind of busy. And to me, it was a bit boring. I am social by nature and enjoyed having coworkers and students and parents of students with whom to interact throughout the day. Now I just had a toddler. We joined play groups and went to story time at the library and we both adjusted—it just took much more effort to adjust than I had planned. Overland Park mom Kerrie McLoughlin has some great tips for moms making the transition from at-work mom to at-home mom.

Because of my social/stay busy/teacher nature, I often planned educational outings for my daughters (the poor kids). I loved to incorporate books with our outings.  Heck, who am I kidding? I still do! My “baby” is 12, and she and I have a mom/daughter date planned to see a play based on a book she and I recently read together. Kristina Light’s article is one I would have devoured when my girls were young. She pairs local animal outings with books for fun tot adventures all over Kansas City this spring.

With pleasant warmer temps at hand, I’m sure you’ll want to spend lots of time outside! Be sure to keep KCParent.com handy. From the best parks to local story times to terrific hangouts just for tiny tots, we’ve got you covered!

Enjoy the longer and warmer days, KC!
