Made from Scratch Halloween Costume

Are you a store-bought or homemade costume mom? I always kind of thought I was more of a buying a piece here and there, and then maybe adding a few creative accessories from home kind of mom. But, make a costume from scratch? Well, that seemed a little ambitious. But believe it or not, my sister-in-law and I whipped up a darling little costume for my 1-year-old nephew Ethan last night! It was “pin”spired from this photo. But with no tutorial or pattern, we had to sort of wing it.

And if you are interested in having a chocolate chip cookie costume (or maybe a pancake with a pat of butter...a bagel...a dunkin donut...or even a cheeseburger for Halloween, here are the basics:

We took a huge chip and dip bowl to trace out our big circles. We decided on straps to tie (similar to the photo) rather than backpack strap style so that they would be more adjustable. We cut long strips of fabric, folded them in half (wrong side out) and left a hole in the middle to make turning them inside out a little easier. 4 straps later we attached them to the 4 “corners” of the back side circle. Do this first, because once it is attached to the front of the cookie it is hand-sewing city!

Next, we took a water glass to trace out our chocolate chips from dark brown felt. We glued them on with fabric glue, but you can stitch them and it would be cute. (One of my limited sewing talents does not include sewing in a circle so we chose to glue instead!)

Then, right sides together, and gather up those little straps inside, you can sew the two cookie pieces together – leave an opening for turning it right-side-out and stuffing though! Then stuff it full enough that it keeps its shape but not so full it becomes a ball! You want it sort of flat-ish.

Then we stitched up the hole, and finished the ends of each strap and voila! A Halloween costume good enough to eat! It took less than 2 hours from start to finish, so why not go for it? You might be pleasantly surprised!
