How do you like to spend Mother's Day?

by

We asked local moms, “How do you like to spend Mother’s Day?”

Stacy G.: My perfect Mother’s Day is to wake up to a clean house, go to church, have a late lunch/early dinner and hang out with the family watching movies.

Geri D.: I love going to the Nelson-Atkins and having lunch in Rozzelle Court or, better yet, a picnic on the lawn.

Season L.: I like to sleep in a little and then spend a nice day with my family. Last year, we went to the zoo and then had a picnic for lunch (that the husbands prepared). I got to spend the day outside and enjoy it with my kids, my mom and my sisters. It was a great day!

Keri P.: I love family and pictures, and each year we make sure to go somewhere around the KC area that makes for some fun backgrounds for Mother’s Day pictures. We just take some candid shots of us while we play, laugh and spend time together. If the weather cooperates, then we also like to go to a local park to play and have a picnic. My kids like to do crafts and make me something special for Mother’s Day each year. It is something I look forward to.

Amber T.: I've been to Powell Gardens on Mother's Day in the past. It's a great place to spend the day.

Lisa T.: We have a cookout at our house every year with both sides of the family. The kids run around the backyard, and the guys do the grilling and cleanup.

Shanna F.: I have a friend whose husband gets her a hotel room on the Plaza the night before. She has a spa day, shops, eats dinner alone and sleeps alone! She wakes up early, all refreshed, and goes home for a lovely breakfast and gifts with her kids and husband.

Kim D.: As long as I’m with my family and not cooking or cleaning, it doesn’t really matter what we do! A gift certificate for a mani/pedi doesn’t hurt either.

Bambi T.: I like to spend a nice quiet day at home with my kids…and to be waited on by my children!

Amy H.: I still spend mine celebrating with my momma...I'll keep doing it as long as I can! We all get together and celebrate all the moms in the family, and the guys do the dishes.

Sharon S.: We start the day at the Mother's Day 5k in Corporate Woods. This will be the second year my mom joins us and the third year for my daughter and me.

Elaine W.: Having never had children, I longingly listened to my sister and friends discuss their lovely Mother's Day celebrations. While in my forties, a dear friend asked me to be the godmother to her darling baby boy. One lovely Mother's Day morning, I heard a small tapping sound at my front door. Upon opening the door, I discovered my 2-year-old godson standing there, lovingly holding out a blooming hibiscus plant that was as tall as him. That was the first, but not the last, time I was made to feel very special on Mother's Day!

Michelle A.: My kids make breakfast for me, with just a little help from Daddy. Pancakes never tasted so good!

Susan S.: I can tell you that as a working mom with a 15-month-old, my ideal day would involve getting to sleep in and then a fun afternoon spent outside with my family, either at a park or the zoo or even just in the backyard. Just being outside and not having to cook would essentially be the best!

Becky M.: The best Mother's Day is having your adult kids tell you that you were not the insane, horrible, off-your-rocker mom you thought you were, and that they have good memories.

Bonnie L.: We go to church and then have the guys treat my mother-in-law and me to lunch. I do as little as possible that day, but work like crazy the day before to clean for her to come over for cards after dinner!

Julie B.: I've found that in my house Mother's Day is really about the kids. I let them take the lead for the day. They find creative ways to show me how much they care, even if it's just a homemade card or messy cupcakes. I've tried having a "day away" and it was just sad. After all, spending time with my kids is what being a mom is all about.

Kristy F.: I like to spend Mother's Day with family. A big family meal with all the moms on both my and my husband’s side of the family! Family is everything, and I'm happiest when I'm with them.

Jayne J.: If you’re lucky enough to have your mother still with you, you can celebrate with a few generations…in my case, my mom, daughter and grandkids.

Carrie B.: My favorite memory was a couple of years ago. The morning of Mother's Day started out being a terrible, horrible, no-good day, but with family around it turned out to be wonderful. I had a nice lunch on the Plaza with my parents, children and sister, and then we went over to Loose Park and enjoyed the beautiful flowers and nature.
