Review: Peter Cottontail III Spring 2013

by

Starlight Children's Theatre brings the second of two delightful shows to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts stage this year. They conclude the season with Peter Cottontail III, a holiday-inspired musical for generations. For fans of classic holiday films and programs, this stage production is sure to please.

We attended the Opening Night performance as the show was met with raucous laughter and applause from its toughest critics - the kids!

In this era of special effects and high definition television, it is such a treasure to treat the family to a show that is simple and imaginative and pure. With bright costumes in classic Easter colors, simple props, slapstick comedy, and beautiful sets - the story goes that Peter's Grandfather is retiring as the Easter Bunny and young Peter Cottontail the third is about to inherit the legendary job. Peter, however, falls into temptation at a nearby cabbage patch where he befriends a family in need of his magical help combating the wily plot of two bumbling thieves. The story is fast-paced and fun - a great memory for your holiday weekend!

“This production really has the look and feel of the old Rankin and Bass television specials including the clearly defined villains. Peter Cottontail, of course, ends up saving the day,” said Director Jerry Jay Cranford.  “Plus it has upbeat musical numbers, dancing and singing. It’s a perfect treat for Easter weekend and certainly family friendly.  Even the youngest children will have a good time.”

The talented includes Cathy Barnett, Walter Coppage, Valerie Dykes, J. Will Fritz, TJ Lancaster and Ken Remmert.  Young adults cast members are Haley Nelson, Brendan Hulla, Emerson Pereira and Journey Tupper. Teen ensemble members are Joann Armstrong, Ally Banks, Jake Bartley, Lucas Dorell, Lindsey Reed Hart, Katie Hulla, Reagan Ogle and Terrace “TJ” Wyatt.
